Former nun struck and killed in N.J. intersection

A 96-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing the street in Newton on Thursday morning, officials said.

Aurora Marcos Travis was walking in a marked crossing on the corner of Madison and Elm streets at about 11 a.m. when she was hit, Newton police said.

The driver, a 25-year-old Newton man, told police he didn’t see Travis and was issued a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Born in Honduras, Travis was a nun with the Franciscan order and an English teacher with a boys orphanage in her native country, according to an online obituary.

She later left the order and got married. Travis lived in California before moving to Newton 40 years ago and serving as Eucharistic minister at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church in her adopted hometown.

She is predeceased by her husband John as well three sisters and three brothers. Travis is survived by one brother.
