Get a call about missing jury duty? It’s a scam, cops say.

Authorities in Somerset County warned residents Tuesday of an uptick in scams that try to trick residents through claims of unpaid taxes, or jury duty.

Victims of both the jury duty scams, and the so-called “distraint warrant tax” schemes, have been targeted by both mail and phone, the prosecutor’s office in Somerset County said.

In the tax scam, residents typically received a letter in the mail from a phony “Tax Processing Unit” advising them about an unpaid tax debt, officials said. The letter includes a phone number for potential victims to call in order to settle the debt before interest accrues or a lien is placed on their property.
