Celebrate freedom with curbs on dark money | Letters

July 4 was the time for the big celebration of America’s independence from the foreign government and the moneyed interests of the British king’s court that once ruled us.

We hope you made it a good celebration, since it might be one of the last of its kind. The U.S. Supreme Court, an appointed branch of our democracy, has granted our presidents criminal immunity from virtually all official actions, something that is befitting of kings.

We have to wonder if the court majority’s ruling is the result of a long line of bad decisions, like its 2010 Citizens United ruling, which permitted unlimited election-related spending by corporations Of this decision, the then-president, Barack Obama, warned it “will open the floodgates for special interests — including foreign corporations — to spend without limit in our elections.”
