Passaic man fleeing Weehawken hit-and-run struck two pedestrians and tried to flee again: prosecutor

Three seniors were seriously injured Friday night in Weehawken when a Passaic man driving large pickup truck struck a car and then hit two pedestrians while trying to flee, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

The initial crash occurred in the area of Avenue at Port Imperial and Port Imperial Boulevard at 9:50 p.m. when Luis Tubac-Socoy, 25, driving a Ford F-350 truck struck a Honda CRV, Suarez said. Tubac-Socoy fled in the truck and struck a 78-year-old North Bergen woman and a 70-year-old Florida woman, Suarez said.

Tubac-Socoy then fled on foot, but he was arrested by the Weehawken Police Department and charged with three counts of assault by auto, two counts of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury, and multiple motor vehicle summonses.

The two pedestrians and a passenger of the Honda, an 80-year-old North Bergen woman, were seriously injured and transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. Four other occupants of the Honda suffered minor injuries.

The hit-and-run crashes are under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Weehawken Police Department. Prosecutor Suarez credited the Weehawken Police Department with the arrest.
