After two seasons as the head girls basketball coach at Trenton Catholic, Sherika Salmon is moving on.

Salmon told NJ Advance Media she has resigned as the coach at the Mercer County school, citing changes at the school and in the county, including that Trenton Catholic is becoming a charter school and the decision for the Mercer County Tournament to be disbanded in favor of an all-CVC tournament.

“A lot went into my decision,” Salmon said. “It was a tremendous two years and I was definitely grateful for the opportunity. I just think I’ve done all I could there at the school, and I think it’s time to explore a different opportunity with all these new changes coming in at once.”

Salmon, a Sergeant at the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, was previously an assistant at Trenton Catholic under Bob Fusik.

She took over before the 2022-23 season, compiling a 31-20 record in two seasons, making the state tournament twice. Trenton Catholic reached the Mercer County Tournament championship game this past winter, losing to Ewing.

Salmon said she was on the Founding Board as Trenton Catholic was in the process of becoming a charter school and will now be a member of the new Board of Directors.

“It’s a great opportunity to still be able to be hands on and oversee and be a part of the decision making of the new school because it’s a school and community that means so much to me,” Salmon said.

Salmon isn’t done coaching basketball yet, either.

She is reuniting with Fusik as an assistant at Mercer County Community College. Fusik was hired as the school’s women’s basketball coach last winter. The school hasn’t had a program the last two seasons, but will return during the 2024-25 season.

“We had great success together at TCA, and we’re looking to do the same (at Mercer),” Salmon said. “I think it’s a unique opportunity because Mercer hasn’t had a team in three years. And me being from the area, and policing in the county and overseeing the county, I think it’s just a good opportunity to still make my mark in the county and give back to the county and be able to field a team.”
