Skiing: Vernon boys, Pingry girls earn gold in team slalom at NJISRA championships

The Vernon boys and Pingry girls skiing teams won their respective team giant slalom races on Tuesday, earning matching NJISRA championships at Winter4Kids in Vernon.

Vernon was led by Matt Tavares, who recorded the fastest time of the day with a 1:13.26, as well as solid days from Evan Amato (1:20.70), Morgan Freifelder (1:22.36) and Tyler Heykoop (1:22.39), each of whom finished within the top 21 of all skiers.

Don Bosco Prep finished second among boys teams, bolstered by top-10 finishes from fourth-place Spencer Donohue (1:16.89) and eighth-place Thomas Harle (1:18.34).

Chase Greenberg finished in 1:14.81, third among all skiers, to lead Morristown-Beard to a third-place finish.

Delbarton’s Louis Friedrich (1:13.78) took second overall, with Pingry’s Camden Collins finishing in 1:16.92 to round out the top five.

The Pingry girls team put on an even more dominant performance, recording four of the top 14 times of the day, including a 1:15.58, the fastest time of the event, from Camille Collins, who finished fourth overall at last season’s NJISRA championships.

Ella Tabish (1:22.47), Annabelle Collins (1:22.77) and Helen Pols (1:23.11) also contributed to the victory for Pingry.

Vernon took second place on the girls side behind a third-place finish from Kelsey Callahan (1:18.09) and a seventh-place time from Grace Tavares (1:21.12).

Sarah Marcovici recorded the sixth-fastest time of the day, finishing in 1:21.04 to lead Ridgewood to a third-place finish.

Morgan Celly of Blair was second overall with a 1:16.94, with Mountain Lakes’ Ella Scarola (1:20.45) and Ridge’s Sophie O’Connor (1:20.97) rounding out the top five.
