Stores at Jersey Shore mall evacuated after police investigate suspicious packages

Part of Cape May’s downtown shopping area was evacuated late Monday after police found two suspicious packages at the Washington Street Mall.

The area was cleared Monday evening after police were first called to the area of Ocean and Washington streets around 5:30 p.m., police said Tuesday. Police did not describe the packages delivered, the exact places to which they were dropped off or their origin. It was unclear if anyone was charged.

After police located the first package, surrounding stores were evacuated, and police found a second, similar-looking package, prompting more evacuations, authorities said. The Atlantic City Bomb Squad responded and found neither package contained any explosive materials, police said.
