As of this morning, 88 large active wildfires are being managed and have burned 1,431,460 acres. Fire managers are using full suppression strategies on 84 of these wildfires.
Many wildfires in the Northwest area continue to exhibit active to extreme fire behavior, with evacuation orders in effect on 15 fires. Several teams are managing multiple fire starts as complexes. Evacuation orders are also in effect for several fires in California, the Northern Rockies and the Great Basin. If you live in an area that has been evacuated, please follow the instructions from local authorities. They will provide the latest recommendations based on the threat to your community and appropriate safety measures.
21,758 wildland firefighters are assigned to wildfires nationwide, including 25 complex and 5 Type 1 incident management teams, nearly 500 crews, 1,280 engines, numerous aviation resources, and four modular Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems, or MAFFS.
The Great Basin Coordination Center's predictive services staff have issued three fuels and fire behavior advisories for Nevada, Southern Idaho and Utah and Arizona Strip. There is also a fuels and fire behavior advisory in effect for California. Residents, travelers, or workers on their way to any of these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks.
The national predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for July through October. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site.
Looking for information on a specific fire? InciWeb is an official source of public information for federally managed incidents. If you live in California, the incident may be listed by CALFIRE. Many jurisdictions will use their social media platforms to post updates about their fires. If you are looking for evacuation information, consult your local sheriff's department. If you are looking for information on smoke impacts, fire.airnow.gov is an excellent resource.
Westerly winds will become more widespread across the northern Intermountain West tomorrow as a cold front approaches the Pacific Northwest. Sustained winds of 12-25 mph and gusts 25-40 mph are likely across the Inland Northwest into northeast California, the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies amid relative of 10- 25% and continued hot temperatures. In addition, abundant mid-level moisture from the monsoon will move north into many of these areas with isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms across the northern Intermountain West except for eastern Washington into portions of the Idaho Panhandle. The thunderstorms will be moving fast and capable of outflow winds exceeding 50 mph, with rainfall footprints small due to the fast storm motions. Due to the moisture, instability, and near-surface dry conditions, pyrocumulonimbus development is likely on any extremely active fires. Improved conditions will continue west of the Cascade Crest due to onshore flow, with cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity. Scattered wet thunderstorms are likely farther south along the eastern Sierra into the central and southern Great Basin, Southwest, and southern Colorado. Drier air in Wyoming and northern Colorado will limit any thunderstorm development this afternoon. Widespread showers and thunderstorms will develop along a stalled front from the southeast Texas to the Mid-Atlantic coast, with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing from the Lower Great Lakes into the Northeast as well. Hot temperatures will continue across Interior Alaska today with minimum relative humidity of 25-40% and isolated afternoon thunderstorms.
