New York City Department of Education Reviews
Rating 4.1 out of 5 20 reviews
The Department of Education is a great urban school district to work in. The students are all so diverse. The best part are the benefits and the job security once you have tenure. The negative aspect is the bureaucracy. The DOE is such a large employer, it makes getting answers so hard and complex.
My experience working for the NYC Department of Education has been very good. I worked in special education and although the students' progress is much slower, it is very rewarding when you see a student achieve their goals. One of the great things about working in the DOE is the hours and the vacation time. In addition, the Department of Education offers great insurance and retirement plans to their employees. However, there are things I would like see the Department of Education change. Unfortunately, teachers have a lot of paper work to do. Teacher usually get one prep, but it is not enough to completed all the paper work that it is require. Usually, the teacher has to take the work home. Additionally, there is not much support for newer teachers.
My experience so far has overall been a good one and there is room for growth. I’ve been able to do the things that I love and that’s work with and help children. However, I believe there should be more protection for paraprofessionals who aren’t permanent yet. As a substitute paraprofessional it seems like even though they get the worse treatment from kids at times there’s really no one to back them up.
