Senior: Deciding to attend Townsend Harris was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. For starters, the community here is very welcoming, whether it be teachers, students, or admin. Spend a day here and you will see a multitude of friendly interactions between students and teachers in the halls (dapping teachers up, to yelling each others’ names and saying hi in the halls) Another aspect I appreciate is this school’s active student body. There are several major student-led events that occur throughout the year, and virtually all students participate it in. FON and S!NG are the major events, and during these times, almost the entirety of the student population comes together to put together the productions. The school is always bustling after school, and most people stay late to participate in clubs, attend FON or S!NG rehearsals, or simply hang out in the halls. Junior: Life at Brooklyn Technical High School is exhausting. Starting with the education, no one prepares you for the sudden increase in workload from freshman, to sophomore, to junior year of high school. You will find yourself burnt out no matter what strategies you try to put in place to prevent it. However, the quality of education in the school is unmatched to most local high school. The courses are all very rigorous, and from my experience, all the teachers are willing to help you achieve greater goals. I especially enjoy the major system within our school since it allows students to immerse themselves in a career-specific education. Something I would like to see changed is the organization within our administration. There are too many instances of miscommunication between the higher ups and the students. Senior: The curriculum is rigorous and well structured with a lot of emphasis and help from the entire administration. The PA is actively involved and sometimes funds some activities for both students and faculty. The IB Program is intense but has a lot of benefits including College readiness! The only short coming about the school is space because it is shared with other schools. However, plans are underway to get a separate school space in the neighborhood. We have been briefed that the concerned officials in DOE has approved some steps and a space has been identified that can accommodate the school and it’s close to public transportation along the L train and local buses. Some parents are organized and do car pooling and share the costs. It’s an amazing plan works very well. School time is great based on the busy schedules and traffic in the area. Senior: Bayside is generally a well-rounded school, the academics is great, there's a lot of rigors at this school so not a single child can say they weren't challenged. The teachers are mixed and can make or break your class experience, but overall, nobody is going to give you a hard time. Clubs and sports are great too, I've heard. Bayside High School is a great school for somebody who at least has some inclination of what they want to do, they offer CTE classes that act like majors in college. And even if you don't know what you want to do, the CTE classes will definitely help you find out, no matter which course you take. I would recommend this school to a plethora of students.... Sophomore: Before coming to the school, I expected my high school life to be one I would never forget. This claim is something that holds some truth to it. There are little to no activities to choose from, as our school has limited the number of club choices, and there is little to no school spirit to be found. However, guidance is supportive, and staff create a space where everyone can express themselves freely. Students can communicate with high-importance individuals such as a principal in a casual setting, something that you cannot find in every school. However, there is little to no diversity as the school is comprised of mainly Asians, and it is rare to see anyone of any other ethnicity. Junior: I have loved my time at All City Leadership Secondary School. The staff are super helpful and genuinely care for all students and put effort in to make changes that we actually want to see. Junior: I think the students are the most vital part of a school, and the Academy of American Studies has incredible students. The student government is incredibly kind and talented at running events. The staff is incredible. My AP teachers across all my years have all been incredibly kind and welcoming, especially my AP European History teacher, who I still greet and talk with even though I no longer have her class. Likewise, my Acting and Playwriting teachers are some of the kindest and funniest teachers I have ever met, and I hope to stay in contact with the majority of my teachers past graduation. Not to say there are no problems, I find school spirit is lacking, and there's not much investment in clubs and sports teams (some less than others though!). Senior: My time at Manhattan Center has truly allowed me to elevate my personality and change of character. Such a large school opens my perspective to the different cultures and diversities that are all over the world. My growth as a person has been fostered by attending this school. The adversities I've faced have introduced me to a brand new method of thinking and association of my beliefs, at Manhattan Center. Although inside the school has changed me it isn't like this outside unfortunately. East Harlem, a dangerous part of the city, is where Manhattan Center is located. The threats of the homeless and addicts linger around this neighborhood not making it safe for many. Possible gang violence is another threat. I would like to see more security present within in the area but I know that has to come from the city and our funding. Freshman: This school has created an incredible community, it has its ups and downs, but overall I think it's good. I have made fantastic friends and created impactful and compassionate interactions with teachers here. The counselor helps you with your schedule and keeps you on track with the credits required per term. The food is alright. Trips made are not so often unless you're on the honor roll, some trips requiring a minimum average of 85%, others with 90%. I would have wished the administrators interacted with the students more often. Sometimes there are one or two teachers who may feel like they aren't doing anything. In the specialized class, architecture, in this case, we have learned the basics of drawing. This included drawing from a one- and two-point perspective, the shadow cast of an object, etc., and concluding the class with a project model of the remodeling of our current school through sustainability features. Senior: My time at the New York City Museum School has been great. Not only are the students kind and inviting, but teachers truly care about the educational and emotional well being of their pupils. Though academics are taken seriously, the staff here at the New York City Museum School makes the time to organize activities for students to branch out, make new friends, and learn more about the city and the world around them. Furthermore, the administration empowers young leaders to forge their own paths. Last year, a friend and I had the idea to create a club where students could write letters to the elderly. Freshman: In the beginning of my journey at Edison I felt like every other student, suffering from isolation and little involvement. I felt caught up in the glory of Junior High School, and the major FOMO while I left all the schools with my past friends. Time passed, and the school places a peer-group connection program between freshmen and seniors. I was able to communicate with the seniors and take of view of their past four years with COVID-19 and the adversity of their lives moving so quickly. The program was not the main part, but the comfortable environment that the school provides. The considerate friends I made were a large factor I admire the school. There are a diverse selection of students and staff, and I feel the array of stories and lives. The largest change I desire from the school is a larger variation of classes provided. Alum: As an alum of New Visions Charter High School - Advanced Math & Science II, it is possible things have changed since I attended. I graduated in 2022, and at the time, there was a lot going on with COVID, as you can imagine. The school took heavy precautions because they really care about the safety of their students and staff. The only safety concern was the other school we shared the building with. They were a bit more hostile and sometimes even confrontational to the students from my school, which was odd because we weren't really supposed to interact. The staff and teachers are amazing, always making an effort to create personal connections with their students, making the high school experience really worth it!... Read 59 reviews
