Senior: Masterman is very focused on STEM type academics. There's a lot less emphasis on the arts, even in English. The teachers are, for the most part, very supportive. The clubs are lots of fun and it's a great way to bond with your peers across grades. The student body tends to be tight knit and supportive of each other, and you'll meet some really close friends. Senior: Best part of going to Central is for how spirited the teachers and students are. Faculty arrange special events throughout the school to relieve students from their stresses and to let them enjoy their highschool years doing things with the people they enjoy being friends with. One of my favorite things about Central is when the school focuses on demonstrating different cultures during March through music, dance and art. Easily one of my favorite things about being a Central students. However, some of the worst parts is the homework load but I totally get it because it essentially prepares us for the amount of work given in college. Senior: Deciding to attend Townsend Harris was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. For starters, the community here is very welcoming, whether it be teachers, students, or admin. Spend a day here and you will see a multitude of friendly interactions between students and teachers in the halls (dapping teachers up, to yelling each others’ names and saying hi in the halls) Another aspect I appreciate is this school’s active student body. There are several major student-led events that occur throughout the year, and virtually all students participate it in. FON and S!NG are the major events, and during these times, almost the entirety of the student population comes together to put together the productions. The school is always bustling after school, and most people stay late to participate in clubs, attend FON or S!NG rehearsals, or simply hang out in the halls. Junior: Life at Brooklyn Technical High School is exhausting. Starting with the education, no one prepares you for the sudden increase in workload from freshman, to sophomore, to junior year of high school. You will find yourself burnt out no matter what strategies you try to put in place to prevent it. However, the quality of education in the school is unmatched to most local high school. The courses are all very rigorous, and from my experience, all the teachers are willing to help you achieve greater goals. I especially enjoy the major system within our school since it allows students to immerse themselves in a career-specific education. Something I would like to see changed is the organization within our administration. There are too many instances of miscommunication between the higher ups and the students. Junior: My experience here at CAMS has been pretty good. Of course there has been ups and downs due to how academically challenging it is, but I have enjoyed my time so far! Some of my best experiences here have been during spirit rally. We were able to take a break from academics and instead focus on the fun aspects that contribute to competing against each other. It brought classes together as a community and even through losses, everyone supported each other. The worst parts would probably have to be around AP testing season due to the fact that we have to balance studying for these tests and class work that has been added on top of all the studying. Senior: The curriculum is rigorous and well structured with a lot of emphasis and help from the entire administration. The PA is actively involved and sometimes funds some activities for both students and faculty. The IB Program is intense but has a lot of benefits including College readiness! The only short coming about the school is space because it is shared with other schools. However, plans are underway to get a separate school space in the neighborhood. We have been briefed that the concerned officials in DOE has approved some steps and a space has been identified that can accommodate the school and it’s close to public transportation along the L train and local buses. Some parents are organized and do car pooling and share the costs. It’s an amazing plan works very well. School time is great based on the busy schedules and traffic in the area. Senior: Bayside is generally a well-rounded school, the academics is great, there's a lot of rigors at this school so not a single child can say they weren't challenged. The teachers are mixed and can make or break your class experience, but overall, nobody is going to give you a hard time. Clubs and sports are great too, I've heard. Bayside High School is a great school for somebody who at least has some inclination of what they want to do, they offer CTE classes that act like majors in college. Sophomore: Before coming to the school, I expected my high school life to be one I would never forget. This claim is something that holds some truth to it. There are little to no activities to choose from, as our school has limited the number of club choices, and there is little to no school spirit to be found. However, guidance is supportive, and staff create a space where everyone can express themselves freely. Students can communicate with high-importance individuals such as a principal in a casual setting, something that you cannot find in every school. However, there is little to no diversity as the school is comprised of mainly Asians, and it is rare to see anyone of any other ethnicity. Junior: I have loved my time at All City Leadership Secondary School. The staff are super helpful and genuinely care for all students and put effort in to make changes that we actually want to see. Junior: I think the students are the most vital part of a school, and the Academy of American Studies has incredible students. The student government is incredibly kind and talented at running events. The staff is incredible. My AP teachers across all my years have all been incredibly kind and welcoming, especially my AP European History teacher, who I still greet and talk with even though I no longer have her class. Likewise, my Acting and Playwriting teachers are some of the kindest and funniest teachers I have ever met, and I hope to stay in contact with the majority of my teachers past graduation. Not to say there are no problems, I find school spirit is lacking, and there's not much investment in clubs and sports teams (some less than others though!). I think like most schools, there are the odd faculty out. Where I loved or was at least positive to all my teachers, there were some oddball teachers who I did not get along with. Senior: My time at Manhattan Center has truly allowed me to elevate my personality and change of character. Such a large school opens my perspective to the different cultures and diversities that are all over the world. My growth as a person has been fostered by attending this school. The adversities I've faced have introduced me to a brand new method of thinking and association of my beliefs, at Manhattan Center. Although inside the school has changed me it isn't like this outside unfortunately. East Harlem, a dangerous part of the city, is where Manhattan Center is located. The threats of the homeless and addicts linger around this neighborhood not making it safe for many. Possible gang violence is another threat. I would like to see more security present within in the area but I know that has to come from the city and our funding. Parent: The best part about MAST is the emphasis on high-level work and the availability of dual enrollment classes at FIU, starting in 9th grade. It's a small school - the 2024 graduating class is 93 student. This provides the opportunity to get to know your teachers and really stand out! Students are required to take two science classes and one math class every year. The down sides: Course selection can be limited because it's such a small school. Almost all electives are taken online on Florida Virtual School, during school hours, including PE, foreign language, art requirements, etc, and the school limits what online classes the student can take, even in they're available on FLVS. The school administration has had some turnover this year, and there is no functional guidance counselor this year. Senior: The best parts of my high school experience were meeting teachers, students, and other staff. Palumbo’s environment is comfortable, welcoming, and supportive. Palumbo provides many different class options and they also have a few AP courses. The only bad experience at Palumbo is their facilities. Palumbo’s bathrooms are in the worst condition possible due to some bathrooms not being available to use since the stall doors can’t close, toilet seat is broken, or the toilet is clogged. Following up on bad experiences, Palumbo does NOT have a great library that can provide resources to students. The library contains scattered books or empty bookshelves. I hope Palumbo can receive the help they need to improve the quality and experience for the future and upcoming students. Senior: I attended Alief Early College High School on the Fall semester of 2020, so I didn’t have a normal high school experience. Nonetheless, I admire that staff and administration’s ability to pivot to hybrid learning, which allowed students to still gain an extensive understanding of what they are learning. Additionally, the school is smaller and newer than most traditional high schools, so the school’s traditions are still forming. Sophomore: I would like to see a greater support of the music and art department in my high school. Just this year an art class was added to the extracurriculars, and the only musically inclined haven for my fellow peers is found within student-made clubs like our MeloJam or the Monarch Orchestra. Although I can see the leadership and love behind the students running these clubs on fundraisers, our school needs to recognize their hard work and finally create and official class or school band for them.
