Parent: BASIS has been a blessing for our family, after switching from the local public school. I was admittedly nervous at first, given the school's reputation for academic rigor. Indeed, the school is strong academically, but it is also a fun and supportive community. The teachers are top notch, making learning experiential, from trips to the grocery store for math or a Chinese restaurant for Mandarin to acting out the evolution of prehistoric man in history. Learning crosses disciplines: math, science, art, and PE together as students build their own kites; science, English, and history together for a final project. Students support each other across grade-levels, with high school students tutoring elementary students who read to the pre-schoolers. Freshman: Overall, my experience at Madeira has been high quality so far. As for the academics, that is truly where Madeira excels. Each class is rigorous, informative, and takes new approaches to learning that I never experienced in my public middle school. As for the teachers, I have mixed feelings- some are excellent, some are horrible. Unfortunately, most of the bad teachers are given to underclassmen. However, I believe one of the best aspects of Madeira is the unique people I've met. I have friends from all over the world- China, DC, the Middle East, Mexico, and more. From this, I have become more cultured upon entering Madeira. I also love how comfortable every student feels at school. This is not a "mean girl" school. Madeira has it made it easier for me to share my voice and be myself. Clubs and sports at Madeira are the only things I think Madeira could really improve on. Parent: Our daughter Selah went to Episcopal for her last two years of high school, moving from Jamaica. We were extremely impressed by the facilities, friendliness of the staff and students, and just the overall atmosphere of feeling like a home away from home. The fact that it is 100% boarding plays a big part in the school being one big family. Selah has absolutely loved it there, we have seen her blossom and grow into a mature and confident young woman, ready for college. We were very impressed with the reports on her grades and the attention teachers paid to the details of her learning style and progress! A real highlight for us. She also danced and got back into running track and represented the school. Episcopal has truly been an all rounded excellent experience for our daughter. Junior: I appreciate the rigorous academics, many opportunities in multiple fields including athletics, arts, music, clubs and co-curricular activities. They also have great finical aid so that students in need can participate in the same activities that more privileged children can experience. One aspect that I would appreciate some focus is in the diversity. They have great DEI coordinators, especially Dr. Singleton who has helped me feel more comfortable with my identity. It would help to have teachers who have the same ethnicity because after a recent survey I realized I have never had a teacher that has identified themselves as hispanic or latino/a, besides a Spanish teacher. Senior: I have attended Veritas for a number of years (starting in 9th grade) and believe it to be time well spent, as I not only gained a lot of knowledge needed to assist me with excelling in college, but made a lot of great friends. I also attended a lot of field trips, getting to know the culture and area I live in. I am aware that there are two campuses in. the United States, and thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Arlington campus. Its proximity to Washington DC and the level of teachers was pretty amazing, especially Dr. Gertz and Mr. Draim. Also, Mr. Elgut and Mr. Herring helped me out a lot with the college application process. As an international student, living just outside the U.S. capital was very important. It was very easy to get around and the public transportation worked very well. I already gained acceptance to one of my top colleges for next year, but am still waiting others, with hope. Parent: We love Cape Henry! My children have been in the lower school and middle school at Cape Henry for six years now and have had a wonderful experience. They have had fabulous teachers, coaches, and administrators. There are lots of opportunities for school involvement. Academic have been great, including opportunities for additional learning for kids who are able to handle above grade level challenges. For example, one of my sons will be taking eighth grade algebra next year in seventh grade (he did 7th grade pre-algebra in 6th grade). There are a handful of kids who are recommended advanced placement in math, even beyond the honors opportunity in their own grade. We worked closely with his teachers and administrators to determine if this track was right for him last year, and they were correct. Senior: Personally, attending Independence High School has given me many opportunities I couldn't even have imagined. From doing Independent Science Research, to learning Spanish, to art. I am able to truly do all that I wish to! The opportunities I get are definitely the best part, the worst part would probably just be the disconnection between teachers, whether it be learning the same stuff over again or never going over stuff a teacher assumed we already learned. I would hope that in the future and as the school builds on, teachers are able to collaborate more together on what material is being taught and what has already been taught.... Read 50 reviews

Parent: Renaissance is simply wonderful. It is a small college prep school that manages to be both nurturing and challenging to its students. My daughter has thrived there. The faculty truly care about the students, and the students truly care about the school and each other. Within this environment of care, kindness, and respect, students are expected to handle a rigorous academic course load. There is plenty of individual attention and no student gets lost in the crowd. Class size is very small. Students are encouraged to pursue their own interests and have several vehicles in which to do so (distinction projects, 11th grade independent study, 12th grade senior thesis). What is most remarkable about this school , however, is that the students are invested in their own learning. They all want to be there!
