Alum: UCMHS is an amazing high school regarding diversity, academics, and teaching staff. Building friendships that last a lifetime can be downright easy, and learning about all of the different cultures is always exciting. The school however falls short in some of its facilities and management. Being a smaller school it doesn't have the large scale facilities you would expect at larger American high schools. Alum: This comfortable school has lovely teachers, facilities, sports, and spirit. For some reason, the school's most tough, time-consuming subject is English. Some of the teachers teach it in an excellent creative and analytical manner while others make it extremely hard and tie it to unwanted leftist, woke ideology like in the senior course (Critical Race Theory, Queer Theory, Feminist Theory, Gender Studies, Marxist/Leninist Theory), drawing attention away from higher pursuit in useful subjects. Students spend so much time on "English" to keep their grade up that a lot end up majoring in similar topics in college, because they are unable to compete with top students in business, law, medicine, and technology. If the English taught more grammar/reading comprehension/inference in a rigorous way, students would be better prepared for the SAT/ACT and graduate free from woke ideology. Parent: Our daughter has had a terrific experience at Greenwich Academy. She loves school, she loves her friends, and she loves her teachers. The facilities are amazing, the academics are top-notch, but most importantly the community is really strong. My daughter feels incredibly noticed by her teachers. She is her best self at school because she is supported and encouraged to try new things and be the best she can be. She is a strong and confident young lady as a result. She is a decent athlete, and has enjoyed playing field hockey and lacrosse. The girls support each other and the school has a lot of spirit which makes sporting events really fun. She was also in the school play, which was one of the most rewarding experiences even though she doesn't consider herself an actress. Now she wants to be! There are several major student-led events that occur throughout the year, and virtually all students participate it in. Junior: Life at Brooklyn Technical High School is exhausting. Starting with the education, no one prepares you for the sudden increase in workload from freshman, to sophomore, to junior year of high school. You will find yourself burnt out no matter what strategies you try to put in place to prevent it. However, the quality of education in the school is unmatched to most local high school. The courses are all very rigorous, and from my experience, all the teachers are willing to help you achieve greater goals. I especially enjoy the major system within our school since it allows students to immerse themselves in a career-specific education. They receive both American and French diplomas that opens many doors to Universities in US, abroad and global careers. Some of the French teachers have a fixed mindset and can be very harsh labeling students. French teachers could have better training on the growth mindset to encourage growth and development of students confidence. This is a major cultural difference as opposed to American teachers. The biggest negative in my opinion is the color system based on competencies for grading of middle schoolers. This system was designed to stop competition among students comparing number grades (0-20) so they focus on improving specific competencies. This has backfired: now students still compare colors, are very confused with competencies and dont know where they are in their academic achievements. Sophomore: Before coming to the school, I expected my high school life to be one I would never forget. This claim is something that holds some truth to it. There are little to no activities to choose from, as our school has limited the number of club choices, and there is little to no school spirit to be found. However, guidance is supportive, and staff create a space where everyone can express themselves freely. Students can communicate with high-importance individuals such as a principal in a casual setting, something that you cannot find in every school.
