Senior: The quality of education is superb. Teachers and staff actively play a part in everyday student studies and work diligently to assist students towards success, whether this be through opening office hours or providing supplemental material in class. While there certainly are a diversity of clubs and opportunities, Payton is a small school and because of this, the variety of activities is limited. However, the school does encourage students to open all kinds of new clubs- an opportunity that students always take advantage of (introducing 3 new identity clubs in my years alone). However, due to the recent changes in faculty, the governing body of the school is not yet unified and students often feel that their voices go unheard. Throughout all of this, the new principle sends out weekly newsletters to parents and guardians with a section open to questions, maintaining excellent communication between the school and home.... Freshman: I haven't actually been to Boston University in person since I start my freshman year this fall. However, I am taking a college-level class online over the summer that I have been finding super interesting. BU has plenty of other classes that interest me and that I would love to take. I've not heard good reviews about the housing at BU, and am a little hesitant about the small dorm sizes and communal bathrooms situation. The students are very competitive with themselves, but for the most part very supportive of each other. Any student can find their passion and their people here, but they need to look and be involved. Fosters independence; diverse socioeconomically; many interesting perspectives; academic rigor; incredible resources; excellent facilities. That being said, not for every student; still need to deal with DOE bureaucracy in a big place; a couple of teachers have checked out or can’t teach; mental health is not the best here. Junior: I wanted more from high school than a 9am to 3pm lifestyle. I am sure that I would do well at my home high school, but would there be a community where I would feel support? The Hotchkiss School has small classes with individualized instruction. The campus community is diverse. There are co-curricular programs (for me Varsity Soccer in Fall and hiking, theater and dance in Spring) and numerous clubs. When I was looking for a club that did not exist, an Advisor worked with students to develop the materials needed. I even studied abroad! I learned how to organize my days with help from Hotchkiss' "The Learning Center." While each day is very busy and even demanding, I have free time to meet up with friends. Parent: My son is having an incredible experience at Hopkins. The academic rigor at the school is exceptional and the level of instruction has far exceeded my high expectations. There's a place for every child to feel like an important part of the community. I've been so impressed by the leadership of the school and welcoming culture. Plus, the facilities are among the best I've seen. People who've visited the campus will also note, you'll get a good bit of exercise going up and down that hill! It's important to note that your child must be ready to work hard. The school does everything it can to position students for success, but that will require a lot of studying. At the same time, the school invests time and money in sports and numerous activities that bring balance to student life. Deerfield's primary focus is on its athletic programs: lacrosse, football, and rowing. It is telling that the head admissions officer is also the lacrosse coach, a dual role that reveals the undue emphasis placed on sports over academics. If you want your kids to go to the same school, do not gamble on Deerfield. Their sibling policy sucks. Truly the worst admission departs of all the 10 boarding schools I experienced. They do not need you and that is how they act, arrogant. Deerfield's college admissions outcomes reflect a troubling bias towards sports and financial clout. Senior: Overall, I've had a really good experience at this school. The classes are difficult and you are not guaranteed immediate straight A's, but they definitely prepare you for college and higher level coursework. The academic and college advisors are always there to help with any problems, and this is something that I have taken advantage of every year of high school. There are also so many different clubs that students can join, and if there is one that doesn't fit their niche, the process to create your own club is very simple. Something I would like to see change is how strict the dress code is enforced in comparison to other issues. Alum: Definitely stressful and the school culture can be very competitive. However, I definitely feel like I was prepared for college by this school. The academics are rigorous and there are many opportunities to earn college credit. Teachers are a mixed bag but most of them are good and well-educated and a lot of the faculty here had a very large and positive influence on me. There are a lot of opportunities to get involved here and the sports are surprisingly not terrible. Alumni network is also pretty good.
