Senior: Throughout my time of being a student in Arlington Public Schools (APS) it’s been overall enjoyable. There is a lot of diversity so it is very easy to find your group of people and make friends. The only necessarily bad thing about APS is the safety. Ever since parents voted to remove School Resource Officers (SROs) from the schools I have felt less safe. Instead of SROs, we have “security guards” who block the entrances of the school. Junior: My school offers many opportunities for students to grow academically. There are many different kinds of after school clubs and activities provided to students. They may want to stay after for a clubs such as the “Green Team” where they focus on educating students about the environment through group projects and they encourage sustainable habits that are beneficial to nature. Our school also has a great theatre program for students to enjoy. Our director is determined to involve any and all students who audition to be apart of the productions. York has a great sports program as well. One thing our school could work on is updating its facilities. For example, the auditorium seats are over 50 year old and falling apart. Most of the money has been spent on the newest addition to the school called the “Learning Commons” which creates a technology based learning environment for students’ engagement. Junior: I have grown up attending Loudoun Country Public Schools and have received a well-rounded education. Though it was not perfect, what school system is? I will say, with us being the richest county in the United States, that we could be given better food; but overall it isn't too bad. Senior: I have thoroughly enjoyed my time within Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Throughout my life, my mother has been employed within the school district. We ended up moving to Virginia Beach from a neighboring city just so me and my siblings could go through VBCPS. I had an amazing elementary school experience, but middle school was a little different. Middle school was where I learned many life skills as it wasn't as academically challenging as my elementary school. Moving onto high school, even though it was during COVID-19 was seamless. My high school was the perfect mix of academically challenging and life skills. My only complaint within VBCPS would be the building facilities. There are nice buildings, but my elementary, middle, and high school were not anywhere near "nice." Junior: My overall experience is fairly decent because of my friends and teachers. Although some teachers can be a bit difficult to understand, a good bit of them actually have immersive lesson plans that allow for students to understand as well as their abilities to answer questions thoroughly and to your understanding. As for school culture, there are many activities throughout the year that I have taken upon myself to be more involved in, i.e, the clubs at our school. Since our school is one of the most diverse schools in the county, we have many clubs to showcase it. We also have seasonal pep rallies with games and performances. Throughout Fairfax County Public Schools, from Elementary to High School, there has been an overall trend in cultural acceptance and more showcases showing that. For example, elementary schools are starting to implement International Nights. Parent: Our overarching policies have placed much less focus on academics and more focus students taking repeated national surveys (which cost our county THOUSANDS) and result in a document telling our leaders information that the teachers/school level administrators already know! Our school system adopts elementary level reading programs that are not approved by the Department of Education and then spend wasted years wondering why our elementary aged students are struggling. We have extremely dedicated teachers who are increasingly frustrated at policies in place that make teaching less focused on education. Our school system garnered national attention at our most recent school board election over the divisive ways that our leaders have chosen to lead. Senior: I have been a student in the Williamsburg James City County School system for almost 13 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in each of the schools I’ve attended. Most teachers want to see their students succeed. The only main criticism I have is the level of college readiness I received. I found myself being very lost during the process, and being the oldest child in my family I had no one to look up to for guidance. Junior: I have attended West Point High School since the 8th grade and have had a lovely time with the academics. They provided me with many resources in terms of college and high school assistance. Alum: I spent 10 years in the PWCS public school system, and through those years I have had so many new and wonderful experiences. I find that the positive that sticks out the most to me is the teachers in the Art programs. Every single one has been so supportive and kind both in middle and high school. I loved talking with my teachers, and visiting their classrooms the following years. The downside to PWCS is definitely the social aspects. The community at the schools were very tight knit and vibrant, but at times it was incredibly difficult for me to find my place among them. Junior: The best part about such a small county is that you get to know those around you well, and are able to engage in a surprisingly abundant variety of extracurricular and club activities. Though the small-town rivalries, especially within physical and academic sports are trying at times, every student, teacher, coach, faculty, and parent puts their all into making everyone’s experience enjoyable. The largest downside to MCPS, especially pertaining to the smaller schools within in, is that there is little college preparation within schools. Outside groups and programs- like ACE- sometimes attend school-day events, but there is not a large, easily-accessible platform of resources for students with little time to spare. Once again, the teachers and faculty always put their best foot forward to education in and outside of the classroom, but they often are unable to fully offer the same level of opportunities for college-readiness preparations as other larger schools and counties.... Junior: Overall my experience has been pretty okay. The teachers I have had are amazing at understanding, and trying to help students. The worst part of my experience is how the administration goes about handling vaping. They shut down the bathrooms, and lock them during class changes. But expect students to use the restroom during class changes. Then they tell teachers to limit students going to the restrooms during class time. So students are forced to run around trying to find what restrooms are open during class change time. Which inevitably makes them late, due to only having 5 minutes to change classes. Parent: I am an alum of PCHS, moved to Florida, and when my son was 12, moved back to Patrick County. I’ve experience the school system in the state of Florida which was not terrible. However, when I moved home, I had options of sending my child to Henry County Public schools, or Patrick County Public schools, I chose without hesitation PC , because PC is, to me, by far the best school district with the best teachers, administrators and support staff! You’re like a one big family, the teachers as well as the support staff and even the cafeteria staff knows kids by name. I was not sure until my senior year if I even wanted to go to college let alone what my career choice was going to be. After 2 semesters with the best Criminal Justice teacher I made my decision. Franklin County Public Schools always put my best interests first and helped me navigate through the beginning stages of college readiness. I would not change a thing about my teachers/staff as they helped me grow so much, as well as my close friends that helped push me to make the decision for the path that I chose.
