Senior: The quality of education is superb. Teachers and staff actively play a part in everyday student studies and work diligently to assist students towards success, whether this be through opening office hours or providing supplemental material in class. While there certainly are a diversity of clubs and opportunities, Payton is a small school and because of this, the variety of activities is limited. However, the school does encourage students to open all kinds of new clubs- an opportunity that students always take advantage of (introducing 3 new identity clubs in my years alone). However, due to the recent changes in faculty, the governing body of the school is not yet unified and students often feel that their voices go unheard. Throughout all of this, the new principle sends out weekly newsletters to parents and guardians with a section open to questions, maintaining excellent communication between the school and home.... Junior: Overall, pretty solid experience. The teachers in the arts department are incredibly accepting and warm people, their strength and patience is impressive and they're the backbone of the NCP arts department. This goes for music and fine arts. Our theater program isn't greatly funded, but is very student led, with many of us making costumes or props in between scenes. The community is tight knit but very welcoming and has incredibly talented folks. The math department has some teachers that use teaching styles that don't work for most students. They move very fast or often gloss over topics, so a student must do a lot of self teaching. The science department has some pretty great teachers, many of which are strict but reasonable. The English department has solid teachers as well and left me very prepared for my AP exams. Speaking of which, certain AP's are required (i.e. precalculus and language + composition). Junior: IMSA is a lot different than the stereotypical high school experience, both for better and worse. It prides itself on its 'inquiry-based methods of learning', and while a lot of its curriculum is unconventional to meet this goal, its very hard to compare it to any other high school academically. There's both good and not-so-good faculty, they also tend to change up a lot between years. Alum: I had a well-rounded experience at Lane. As a student in the Computer Science concentration, I was able to take a wide array of classes regarding computer science, from AP CSA to classes such as Intro to AI. I felt that I was rigorously challenged while also being supported by my teachers, counselor, and in regard to my choices for college. Lane offered me many opportunities to try new things and take AP and honors classes while also being aware that, as a student, I was more than work. What I disliked about Lane was that it was difficult to get to know people. Because people were so spread out, it was difficult to spend enough time with someone to become friends with them. Junior: I moved to the Northbrook area from the city of Chicago in middle school so I'm a somewhat newer face. My experience has been very welcoming, and both the community and the students have been very warm and friendly. The academics are of high standard, so I feel like I'm getting a quality education. The best part is probably the number of new people that I've been able to meet and become friendly with, while the worst part is most likely the slight lack of diversity among the student population, which is only the worst part because of the big difference from my old school in the city. Senior: I had an overall great experience at William Fremd High School. The teachers are dedicated and the curriculums are strong. The school is nice except class sizes are not small with 29-30 students per class. There are good clubs. It is a really good school for many diverse students regardless of their own background. I was part of a very good cheerleading program, where I did both competitive and sideline cheer. That was one of the best experiences at the school. I love that my teachers treated me with respect. There are tons of resources to have access to whether be the library or the tutoring center. I also love the atmosphere of the sports and clubs. Spirit days and football game days are some of the most fun days of the entire year. There are many resources to encourage student success as well as promote the safety. Junior: Barrington High School is a school that can provide a variety of experiences. There is virtually an activity, class, sport, and more for everyone and every type of person at our school. I believe the opportunities provided at this school and the district are incredibly helpful towards preparing students for college. The academic excellence and competitiveness is what makes BHS students go on to attend a variety of colleges. Although there are some issues with this school. Diversity is certainly not one of BHS’ strong suits along with the school culture which can certainly be toxic at times. Senior: The academics at Naperville North are very strong, but if you are a student, it all depends on the type of people and clubs you surround yourself with. My peers are all high achieving and take many accelerated courses (honors and AP). The environment this creates is friendly competition. We encourage one another to do well and to take our education seriously. The clubs are also really nice. There's something for everyone, and if there isn't you can create one. The communities the school builds are everlasting and the relationships are invaluable. They recently changed the food provider as well, so the food is also much better than before. Junior: The best part about Glenbard West is the great amount of possible classes you can take, just viewing all the possibilities makes me so excited. As a current junior, class variety is very important to me because of the freedom to choose what YOU want to learn. As for the worst parts of the school, there are quite a bit of bullying issues as well as some lost in trust with security considering we had 2 bomb threats and an intruder alert. Glenbard west also doesn’t let much of the students spread their voice when it comes to huge schedule changes. As far as this year, we have 3 different schedules. Next year they’re giving us 3 different schedules but, instead of a regular school day we’re doing block schedule. Senior: Academically, my experience at Deerfield High School has been overall positive. While I have had poor experiences with a few of the teachers here, the majority are amazing and truly care about their students. My freshman year I was going through a very difficult time with my mental health, as I was struggling with undiagnosed ADHD and depression. Multiple teachers and my school counselor supported me and advocated for me to get the accommodations that I need. I also love how I have been able to form close relationships with teachers on a personal level. As far as the social life here, it can be difficult at times since groups are somewhat clicky. I found my circle of friends here that I love, but I would be lying if I said that some people treat others differently if they are not in their friend group or of a certain “social status,” however I can imagine that this is a common theme among many high schools. Junior: My name is Eleftheria Xinos, I am going into my junior year of high school, and I attend Naperville Central High School in Naperville, Illinois. The peaks and pits of my experience so far have surrounded my teachers. Some of the teachers I have had, like my freshman year math teacher, have given me something to be grateful for. He was great, and would go around the room during work time, to help students. He would always have tests graded the same day. He took his job seriously. It was obvious how much he cared about his students learning. On the other hand, my sophomore year English teacher almost always took months to grade assignments, and some were never graded at all, because he "never got to it," or "didn't have time." We would anxiously enter the classroom on days when we were told we'd get assignments back, and somehow not end up actually receiving our scores for weeks. Senior: My experience at Evanston Township High School was very positive because my teachers really cared about all of their students and encouraged me to do my best. I made so many close friends and felt really connected to most of my classmates. ETHS has a wide range of clubs and sports and I really appreciate all of the services the school provided. Alum: This school was a challenging and top-notch academic institution, with amazing teachers who did a fantastic job at college preparation. However, there is so little diversity, and there is a segregation that typically occurs with the types of classes and the caliber of curriculum and teacher for different demographics. Overall, I had a decent experience, however, as a white-facing mixed indigenous person, I had to constantly defend my identity as it was constantly being invalidated. Many people would only believe in what they could see and had a small view of the world as they lived in a sort of bubble. But I feel as if I would never have been able to get where I am today, at Brown University, without Highland Park High School and it's rigorous academics.
