Parent: Having three children attend Nueva from 2004-present, we’ve seen the school evolve from a small PreK-8 to a multi campus PK-12 school. Despite the changes over the years, the overall mission of the school - to serve gifted learners within a caring community - has remained constant. I cannot point to a more dedicated and generous parent group, or more wonderful, unique, (quirky!) caring teachers and staff. Negatives: extremely competitive nature of the students, lack of diversity, and the amount of privilege apparent in the population. Parent: Our daughter arrived at Castilleja for 6th grade, and she is now finishing 7th grade -- and she thrived both years! She has developed a diverse group of close friends, and she has loved her teachers. As her parents, we required her to take Mandarin starting in 6th grade (one of the only things we've ever required her to do against her will), and she has absolutely loved her Mandarin teacher and the language as a result. Similarly, she disliked Math going into 6th grade, but now she loves her two math teachers and the subject. Castilleja provides an incredible education beyond traditional education. Casti teaches girls how to learn, how to manage their time, how to self advocate, executive functions, SEL, and how to behave socially. In addition, teachers and administration constantly focus the culture on the school's core values: Courage, Conscience, Courtesy, Charity, and Character. Parent: College Prep has been a fantastic experience for my son. The school provided many opportunities for him to extend/deepen areas of interest (math, computer science, baseball, basketball), but also to explore and grow in other areas (debate, leadership, writing). While entering as a more reserved student, at College Prep he took on leadership roles in various clubs, started new clubs with his friends, and even frequently presented on various topics during the weekly “Common Classroom” (students, teachers, alumni present on areas of varied interest). During the application process, a big draw was an impression that the student body and teachers were kind and collaborative; his experience proved this to be resoundingly true. Finally, his teachers and the classes have been spectacular; I believe the education has been more rigorous and engaging than many university-level classes or seminars. Parent: Head-Royce is an excellent school for our son in the Lower School. We were accepted to all the top Bay Area private K-12 schools & HRS was our first choice for Kindergarten. It’s amazing how well all the teachers really know him, evident in the Parent/Teacher conferences where they’re able to identify his strengths & weaknesses. Kids have different abilities, and the teachers are really able to align academics to each child’s ability (e.g a strong reader, but need more help in writing). I’ve seen my son grow into a kinder, smarter, and more confident individual - all thanks to the incredible teachers & faculty at the school. Outside of school academics, the parent community is incredible. There is so much help, support, & advice available, & we’re very close with many of the parents. The teachers and staff are not only great at their jobs, but are great people who you love interacting with (shoutout to Jon and Chris for making me possibly want to go into teaching and making me love preforming music respectively). The music department is one of the most fun experiences you will have while also contributing to growth as a person and as a musician. The work here is hard. Most students will get some Bs at least, but teachers genuinely want you to preform well and are incredibly helpful and accessible (that doesn’t mean they’re pushovers). Athletics are good generally, but the soccer and lacrosse programs get disproportionate attention due to having good talent. Student body is as great as you can ask for given they’re high schoolers. Senior: Branson is an exceptional school. The academics are rigorous, the campus is stunning, and the food is gourmet, but if there's one thing that stands out to me, it's the teachers. Not only are they highly qualified (think Ph.D.'s from Stanford, years of experience), but they also genuinely care about students' learning. They're friendly, engaging, and willing to discuss just about anything with you. In fact, I've hardly had a single negative experience with any of them in my four years at Branson, which says a lot. Another strong point is the college counseling program. Our college counselors are extremely kind and helpful in navigating students through the inherently stressful college application process; they also write fantastic letters of recommendation and give excellent tips, evidenced by our college placement statistics that rival those of Exeter, Andover, Harvard-Westlake, etc. Overall, I highly recommend Branson to anyone looking for a well-rounded high school experience.... Parent: Our kids have had an amazing experience at Athenian. The teaching has been truly outstanding across the board. The middle school experience, particularly the Focus Days, is uniquely engaging. What we are really appreciating about the high school is the focus on building character and critical thinking skills hand in hand with deep dives into academic subjects. Junior: UHS stands out among other private SF schools for its support of critical thinking and genuine inquiry. There's a good combination of "classic" classes, like Western Civ, which spans art, music, and history from the birth of humanity through the Western hemisphere to today, and a range of languages, including Latin, as well as more specific and modern electives such as Remaking Masculinity or Global Infectious Diseases. The Julia Morgan part of campus is very pretty and lends it a stately, classic liberal arts school feel. Senior: I’m a senior at KLS, and this is my fourth year here. I love it! Khan Lab School is an exceptional place with a challenging yet supportive curriculum where students work at their own pace. We have many clubs, with new ones popping up every year. For example, I co-created and co-led the Drama and Acting Club last year, culminating in a full-on play—one of the best experiences of my life! The partnership with Foothill College is a game-changer, providing early exposure to advanced coursework. Our 2023 Ecuador trip allowed students to work with native people and learn from them. Junior: The best way I can describe Priory is that it is soft. For some people, this is a great thing. For students who struggle to keep up in high school, Priory is a nice protective bubble—they will definitely encounter less hardship here than at many other schools (although depending on your pedagogical philosophy, perhaps the hardship is more formational). Priory cangive these kids some room to breathe and catch up on skills that they may have fallen behind on. However, if you are a high-performing student academically or socially, I advise you to look elsewhere. While the support and leeway that Priory offers to stragglers is admirable, the opportunities and classes that it offers to high-achievers are lacking compared to other schools, especially given the sheer scale of the tuition. Junior: San Domenico is an amazing school! Every day as I arrive on our gorgeous campus, I am so grateful to be attending SD and for the education I am receiving here. When people ask me what makes SD stick out among other independent schools, I always say our international student body, with students from more than 20 countries from all corners of the world. From my international friends and classmates, I have learned about the discrimination against Romanians in Eastern Europe, how China’s Belt Road Initiative is impacting countries such as Zimbabwe, and how Türkiye and the United States’ political atmospheres are similar. Watching the leaves change color and the goats grazing on the green hillsides in spring always uplifts my spirits, and I believe our campus helps us receive an enriched educational experience. Middle school student: San Francisco High School of the Arts have teachers that really care about their students. Whenever any students have any problems or questions, the teachers really want to help. The lunch of the school is so good! The chefs in the school kitchen make everything from scratch, like ramen noodle, pizza, green onion pancake, pork buns yams. My favorite foods they make are pizza, spaghetti, breaded chicken, ramen, sushi, burgers, and the Mexican meals. The school also has a three day and two night camping trip in the school year. Alum: I enjoyed my time at St. Ignatius. I think that the academic curriculum is efficient at teaching students the important things and allows them to take it at their own pace. I met some of my closest friends there and I had the most fun with them. The events that take place during and after school always kept me entertained and gave me memorable moments to look back on. While I was in high school, I was absolutely scared of going into college. But after just finishing my first year, I recognize that SI prepared me for the pace and rigor of college. Not to say that SI didn't have its faults, because it did. As a senior there, our school spirit was slowly decreasing and school events became depressing. The administration also clashed with student views at times but this was often resolved when students started speaking out against administrative injustices. I hope that SI grows in their school unity and that students find a place for themselves while studying there.... Read 379 reviews
