Junior: I wanted more from high school than a 9am to 3pm lifestyle. I am sure that I would do well at my home high school, but would there be a community where I would feel support? The Hotchkiss School has small classes with individualized instruction. The campus community is diverse. There are co-curricular programs (for me Varsity Soccer in Fall and hiking, theater and dance in Spring) and numerous clubs. When I was looking for a club that did not exist, an Advisor worked with students to develop the materials needed. I even studied abroad! I learned how to organize my days with help from Hotchkiss' "The Learning Center." While each day is very busy and even demanding, I have free time to meet up with friends. My teachers are approachable and I feel comfortable speaking to them. That is how I feel, in general, about Hotchkiss- I belong and I am comfortable! Parent: Kent School has given our daughter a first-rate education and friends for life. Its Episcopalian roots give the school a sense of purpose and moral clarity yet the administration is also responsive to the demands of the modern world. Legendary rowing program and lots of other fun things, from yoga to improv. First-rate academics, including advanced statistics, psychology, and global health studies. Our daughter was able to study fashion design and create a portfolio, a rarity at a private school. She had an amazing and caring advisor and great teachers. Kent has one of the most gorgeous campuses-it is small and cohesive enough that it fosters a close community. Nice to have a cute town with good restaurants/shops within walking distance. Food is great--the milk machines stock milk from Arethusa Farm! The Appalachian Trail runs right next to the campus--it would be nice to see the school connect more with the incredible hiking and outdoor opportunities but otherwise no complaints.... Sophomore: I would consider the Frederick Gunn School to be my second home. Here, I am in a nurturing environment surrounded by what I would like to believe, are my lifelong friends. The teachers are inspiring and I genuinely look forward to going to class. The academic rigor is tough, but I feel supported by my advisor, teachers, and other adults on campus. Parent: Our daughter is finishing up her Freshman year and Forman has saved her life. This is a school that is reaching those kids who are falling through the cracks of the public school system on a stunning campus with facilities most college Universities don’t have. The programming provided to parents on spring and fall parents weekends are second to none. The kids we have met on campus when we visit are well mannered, well spoken, kind hearted kids. They’re in high school so yes, they get up to things. Forman does an amazing job providing guardrails for kids with ADHD - impulse issues, etc. Their days are scheduled in a way that keeps them active and cared for. Parent: Our son transferred to Woodhall from a local day school where he was failing academically and struggling socially. During his time at Woodhall he was MVP on his sports team, maintained a 3.8 GPA and gained more social confidence. Some parents might appreciate this- after his time at Woodhall he cares about how he presents himself to the world- he showers and gets dressed (no more sloppy sweats or Pjs to school). Matthew Woodhall and Sasha Skulsky are the most impressive school administrators. The teachers and staff are dedicated, engaged and care about the students. My son is now entering college and looks back on his time at Woodhall fondly and hopes the food at college is just as good as it was at Woodhall. Not many students feel that way about high school.... Middle school student: Our children have been attending Torrington Christian Academy for over four years and are now in the middle school. So far, their experience overall has been very positive. My students enjoy their teachers and classes, and feel motivated to not miss a day of school. In the K-5 grades, the classes were structured with primarily one teacher teaching all the subjects with the extracurriculars (ie - music, art, gym) taught by other instructors. Going into the uppers school (6-12th grades), they have a variety of different teachers who specialize in the various academic classes alongside the extracurricular instructors. The transition into middle school and this variety of teachers was positive and communication has continued to be easy when needed (dealing now with several teachers, instead of the few in the elementary). Alum: My experience at Rumsey was amazing! Excellent teachers, students, sports, facilities, etc. The campus is beautiful in every season of the year. The classes are small so the students are able to get individualized attention and have close relationships with the teachers. Even though the school is in the middle of nowhere (which is also beautiful), the teachers always planned field trips, for example, our french teacher took us to Quebec City, our science teacher took us to the Hartford Science museum, our Lacrosse coach took us to a Yale vs. Dartmouth lacrosse game, our English teacher would teach classes in the woods. There are cool activities on Mondays of the Fall and Spring Terms, I took Archery and Grilling & Chilling (you just grilled meat and hang out). Our dorm parents were super nice and planned surprises for birthdays and took us in dorm trips during the weekends to dinner, movies, Target, etc. I was an international student only for 1 year but I made lifelong friendships....
