Junior: I wanted more from high school than a 9am to 3pm lifestyle. I am sure that I would do well at my home high school, but would there be a community where I would feel support? The Hotchkiss School has small classes with individualized instruction. The campus community is diverse. There are co-curricular programs (for me Varsity Soccer in Fall and hiking, theater and dance in Spring) and numerous clubs. When I was looking for a club that did not exist, an Advisor worked with students to develop the materials needed. I even studied abroad! I learned how to organize my days with help from Hotchkiss' "The Learning Center." While each day is very busy and even demanding, I have free time to meet up with friends. My teachers are approachable and I feel comfortable speaking to them. That is how I feel, in general, about Hotchkiss- I belong and I am comfortable! Parent: My son is having an incredible experience at Hopkins. The academic rigor at the school is exceptional and the level of instruction has far exceeded my high expectations. There's a place for every child to feel like an important part of the community. I've been so impressed by the leadership of the school and welcoming culture. Plus, the facilities are among the best I've seen. People who've visited the campus will also note, you'll get a good bit of exercise going up and down that hill! It's important to note that your child must be ready to work hard. The school does everything it can to position students for success, but that will require a lot of studying. At the same time, the school invests time and money in sports and numerous activities that bring balance to student life. Parent: Kent School has given our daughter a first-rate education and friends for life. Its Episcopalian roots give the school a sense of purpose and moral clarity yet the administration is also responsive to the demands of the modern world. Legendary rowing program and lots of other fun things, from yoga to improv. First-rate academics, including advanced statistics, psychology, and global health studies. Our daughter was able to study fashion design and create a portfolio, a rarity at a private school. She had an amazing and caring advisor and great teachers. Kent has one of the most gorgeous campuses-it is small and cohesive enough that it fosters a close community. Nice to have a cute town with good restaurants/shops within walking distance. Food is great--the milk machines stock milk from Arethusa Farm! The Appalachian Trail runs right next to the campus--it would be nice to see the school connect more with the incredible hiking and outdoor opportunities but otherwise no complaints.... Alum: Pomfret honestly changed my life. I have made life-long connections with both friends and faculty, and had the support and resources to go to the college of my dreams. That being said, so much of Pomfret is incredibly flawed. The administration is money-hungry, demanding over-priced tuition from international students and underpaying their faculty, they refuse to put money into the DEI department, yet broadcast black faces on their websites, and all and all support a toxic environment that makes the school uncomfortable for students of color. The mental health resources are a failure due to underfunding. We have two amazing therapists who are overworked. So many are forced to leave the school due to substance abuse without getting help for their issues. Parent: Our daughter has had a terrific experience at Greenwich Academy. She loves school, she loves her friends, and she loves her teachers. The facilities are amazing, the academics are top-notch, but most importantly the community is really strong. My daughter feels incredibly noticed by her teachers. She is her best self at school because she is supported and encouraged to try new things and be the best she can be. She is a strong and confident young lady as a result. She is a decent athlete, and has enjoyed playing field hockey and lacrosse. The girls support each other and the school has a lot of spirit which makes sporting events really fun. She was also in the school play, which was one of the most rewarding experiences even though she doesn't consider herself an actress. Now she wants to be! Parent: We have had two boys go through the school starting in pre-K. We are stunned, absolutely stunned by the academic rigor of the school. It is very easy to (sort of) for a school to identify top level 8th graders and see them graduate at the top of the class. It is far harder to identify outstanding 5 year olds. What we have seen at Brunswick is that the top end of the school academically is vastly over represented by those who entered in the early years. To me, that says that the education is excellent. I am also completely stunned that anyone would suggest that the academics of the school is not top notch and that children would be better off going to a boarding school.
