Senior: GBN was an amazing experience since the teachers were incredibly supportive both emotionally and academically while the students themselves helped to foster strong relationships with one another. Students were always encouraged to push themselves and were held to the highest academic standard. While some students flourished under the pressure at the school, others felt suffocated or overlooked if they weren't in honors classes. In addition, I would've liked the student body to have been more diverse; perhaps this was why portions of the student body held and expressed racist, homophobic, and misogynistic views and values.... Parent: We chose Hewlett Woodmere because of its proximity to our family in Brooklyn and Queens as well as proximity to Manhattan. The town is also close to JFK. We are able to maintain a small town suburban feel while still maintaining access to the city. The schools in the district are amazing. They cannot be compared to the schools we attended in NYC. When my children started FECC, they declared it the best school ever! But with each new school they attended they said they had a new favorite. Communication in the community is open, so you can contact teachers, principals, and administrators, as well as board members easily (call, email, facebook) and they will respond. Meetings are open to the public so all community members have a voice to contribute to the community. Our children were able to thrive here and our commutes to work were 40 minutes or less.... Junior: Best and worst parts would probably be the classes. Some classes were really enjoyable, good teachers, good curriculum, and i actually enjoyed it. Other classes were pretty bad though; some teachers were either really inconsiderate graders, poor quality teachers, or had disorganized curriculums. Senior: I’ve spent three years at this high school and now I’m starting my fourth one. One of the best parts of learning here at Stevenson High School is we have lots of resources available to students. Examples include free tutoring before/during/after school, multiple workout rooms, drivers ed classes etc. Our school holds a World Fair every year to educate students and parents on the cultures within our school. One thing I’ve noticed over the past three years is hatred among ex friends. I would like to see this change. I would like if everyone came together instead of being toxic towards everyone.... Middle school student: Every single teacher and staff member in Syosset will make you feel special and want you to succeed. Syosset has outstanding music, sports, and academic programs. I would like to see more of an inclusion for people with allergies to cafeteria food. However, the food they serve has very good nutritional value and they offer a variety of snacks. Syosset also has an impressive language program with many students passing with 5 consecutive years throughout the High school experience. Parent: The High School provides a great pre-college preparation with many AP classes available to those seeking more rigor in their academic endeavors. Senior: My overall experience with Edgemont High School was life-changing. I moved to this school at the beginning of high school and it was very rigorous and competitive, very different from my old school. Junior: I love that there is a variety of clubs and activities on campus. The campus strives to be open-minded and make safe spaces for queer students and people of color. It has a great program for veterans. We are reminded that we are on tribal land. The campus has a variety of food options including vegan and vegetarians meals. It offers a variety of majors for those who love the outdoors and provides opportunities for internships and outdoor learning. The campus is close to redwood trails for running or biking.
