Alum: I transferred into Shipley junior year, and while I was hesitant at first, it ended up being the greatest decision I ever made. I was nervous on my first day; however, as I walked through the doors, I was immediately greeted by the friendly faces of both teachers and students. The community is so welcoming, and I felt immediately at home. It's an easy community to make friends in, and by lunch I already had a friend group to sit with that lasted the duration of my time at the school. The small class sizes allow for good student-led discussions and close relationships with teachers who are able to devote time to helping you one-on-one and working with you individually to succeed. The teachers truly form deep relationships with their students which creates a more relaxed and collaborative learning environment. Parent: My daughter started in kindergarten and is now in 10th grade at GA. The most exceptional thing about this school is the teachers. They are dedicated, passionate, intelligent and truly love teaching. They establish connections and relationships with students and actually enjoy spending time listening to what is going on in their students’ lives outside the classroom. In lower school , having two teachers in each classroom allows for differentiated learning and individualized attention to all students. Teachers really know their students. In middle and upper school, dropping in to meet with teachers during free periods is highly encouraged and helps solidify teacher/student connections and learning. The teacher retention rate says a lot about the school. Most all stay 30-40 years!!! Freshman: I am a prospective 9th grade student entering this fall. As an international student I feel very supported by the school. The teachers so far are very warm and helpful, and they have provided resources for summer enrichment. I aqquainted a fellow prospective student in my city, and we have become quite good friends. However, since I am already pretty familiar with some of the students there at Westtown, I heard some bad things regarding student friendships and relationships, but overall I think its relatively a lot less toxic than some of the other schools I researched about when I was applying. Junior: Since coming to Newark Charter, I have grown significantly as a person. My school prioritizes excellence in academics and decorum. Within my time at Newark Charter School, I have learned organizational skills and determination that I never thought I would acquire. The continuous strive for excellence is so great at Newark Charter that the taking of multiple AP courses and an excessive amount of extracurricular participation has become the standard among the Newark Charter students and community. The environment and competition can be degrading and extremely time-consuming. Parent: We have 2 kids in RES for past 2 years. We moved from a nearby town to Radnor mainly for the school system. Our kids were in a private school that didn’t seem as well funded. Here it seems the teachers and students are happy. I don’t see a lot of pressure on grades and homework like I did in private school. Not sure if that’s good or bad. It just seems homework was a lot lighter in public school, maybe just at elementary level. Lunch program is decent and has good options. I believe its subsidized and reasonable priced. PTO - is very strong and provides lots of support and programs for the school throughout the year (fundraisers, pretzels, international week, etc). Student diversity is relatively normal.... Our kids were in a private school that didn’t seem as well funded. Here it seems the teachers and students are happy. I don’t see a lot of pressure on grades and homework like I did in private school. Not sure if that’s good or bad. It just seems homework was a lot...Lunch program is decent and has good options. I believe its subsidized and reasonable priced.PTO - is very strong and provides lots of support and programs for the school throughout the year (fundraisers, pretzels, international week, etc).Student diversity is relatively normal..
