Sabot has a different approach to education, one that empowers the innate curiosity of every student. Through interactive experiences both in the classroom and throughout our wooded grounds, our students find joy in learning. We challenge them to be effective communicators, expansive thinkers, and eager problem solvers.

Our Reggio-inspired approach for preschool through Grade 8 is unique to Richmond and one of only a few programs of its kind in the United States. Our educational framework relies on Sabot's 5 Rs—Research, Representation, Reflection, Reach, and Relationship—which are the foundation upon which our students build their learning and understanding, creativity, ideas, and wonder.

The child in nature

While many schools boast an outdoor classroom, we are uniquely situated beside the 106-acre Larus Park--a wooded wonderland that is one of our most valuable teachers. "If we are going to save the environment," writes Richard Louv, "we must also save an endangered indicator species: the child in nature.” At Sabot, the provocations and inspirations of the forest are among our greatest gifts.

Over the ten years our daughter spent at Sabot, the school consistently exceeded our expectations by fostering a nurturing, creative, and intellectually stimulating environment. The partnership between teachers and students in the classroom is remarkable, allowing children agency to pursue their curiosities. Sabot cultivates a love of learning and development of critical and creative thinking skills while promoting social and emotional development and a strong sense of community. One of the most positive aspects is the interaction between different grade levels – students engage consistently with students in all grades. The forest is integral to life at Sabot, offering students the chance to explore, learn, push themselves, collaborate with peers, and simply enjoy being kids. Choosing Sabot School for our daughter was the best decision, it is truly a special place that creates well-rounded, creative, curious, and happy children. We wholeheartedly recommend Sabot to any parent!

Review Sabot School

All three of my children went to Sabot School and they all credit the school with developing a love of learning that has carried them through to great success at high school, college and beyond. The school's focus on collaborative project-based learning allowed them the time and space to identify their learning strengths and challenges and work on improving both. The environment - a 28-acre leafy campus - was intentionally incorporated into my children's learning process by a group of dedicated teachers intent on bringing the best out of every child. One of the more accessible and impressive examples of how Sabot prepares their students for life in high school and beyond occurs at the end-of-the-year graduation ceremony when all graduating 8th-grade students reflect in front of an audience of their peers, friends, and families on their learning experience at the school. If you are wondering what this school is about, watch one!

Our child was suffering from extreme anxiety at his home school. We decided to move him to a smaller educational environment in hopes of him finding success personally, socially, and academically. I cannot say enough about the loving support he received from day one at Sabot! His confidence grew each day, those good days turned into months and now we look back at the time he spent at Sabot as pivotal in his development in becoming a confident human again. We owe a deep gratitude to the people of Sabot and they will always hold a special place in our hearts!
