Established in 1919, North Shore is an independent, coeducational school for students in JK-12th grade. Here, education is a student-centered, transformative experience where students receive personal attention and diverse perspectives, while being immersed in a culture of participation. One of the advantages of a school like North Shore is that students are part of a cohesive academic experience. Our teachers and administrators have developed a curriculum that takes students from one grade to the next on an intentional path to their academic growth and development. The result is that our graduates consistently tell us North Shore has prepared them incredibly well for college.

We have been at NSCD for 11 years with two kids, and it has been an outstanding experience all the way up that we look forward to continuing into high school. The faculty and academics are absolutely stellar, with programs and teachers that meet or exceed the big well-known suburban schools, with smaller class sizes. Sports teams and clubs are thriving at both middle and high school levels, and offer everyone a chance to find their passion. Music, art and stagecraft are truly unparalleled, and have yielded several famous performing arts alums. As a parent, it's not always easy to find a place where your kid can be supported as they experience the predictable twists and turns of childhood and adolescence. I attended a big suburban high school growing up and had just assumed my kids would as well. So glad we found NSCD! It has been an ideal place for our kids to excel, sometimes stumble, learn from those experiences and to really absorb the school's "Live and Serve" ethos.
NSCD touts ‘community’ and inclusivity, yet a toxic student environment and bullying belie these claims. Small class sizes in the Upper School breed clicky, cruel groups of students leading to rampant bullying - a problem the administration is unwilling to acknowledge, especially when bullies are from wealthy families or have “sway.” For years, concerns about the culture, bullying, and student isolation have fallen on deaf, uncaring ears. Nothing about NSCD’s social experience is normal or “safe” for adolescent mental health and development. NSCD’s declining enrollment problem will exacerbate these issues. Although I benefited from my NSCD education, academic rigor and teacher quality declined during my 9-year attendance. The STEM department is atrocious, but even the excellence of humanities is propped up by only a few talented, passionate teachers. To any student unhappy at NSCD, I give the advice I wish I had been given- LEAVE. There are healthier school options in the area.
North Shore was a fantastic school for me in all my years there in lower, middle and upper school. I had incredible teachers who were passionate about being educators and truly cared about their students. In lower school, teachers and classmates felt like extensions of your family and in upper school they were the people you looked up to and admired and respected. I was so fortunate to have the variety of exposure to the arts and athletics, all kinds of club offerings to be a part of and leadership opportunities. It was a supportive place to try new things out and navigate middle school years. My sister and I got the challenge and support we needed academically to reach our potential and to go on to the colleges we wanted to attend and into the fields we were passionate about, all thanks to our foundation at NSCD. Our family has lifelong friendships from our years here and cherishes being a part of the lifelong network an independent school like this provides.
