North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Reviews
Rating 4.45 out of 5 187 reviews
NCSSM is a top-notch high school. The academics are unmatched, the research opportunities are on par with universities, and the extracurriculars make campus a community. This school is extremely challenging when it comes to work load, but there is copious support available to help you to succeed and you really get out of it what you put into it. Between a required college readiness class, a personalized recommendation letter from your counselor for every student, and the residential experience 2 years early, you would be hard-pressed to find a school that prepares you for college better. Automatic acceptance and free tuition to NC system schools doesn't hurt either. A lot of people accepted to NCSSM come in with very high expectations, and I think it's important to remember that this is still a public school. Lots of people complain about the food or campus, but I personally don't mind if it means I can use scientific and manufacturing tools that many colleges don't have.
Overall, NCSSM has genuinely changed my life for the better. It offers underprivileged students the opportunity to have a good education, where they originally would have been set behind. I decided to go to NCSSM so I could be challenged. At NCSSM, I did have a hard time transitioning, especially because I did not have a very broad learning background- especially in sciences. My physics and especially biology teachers were so extremely helpful with this. I was having a hard time in my biology class because I did not have the expected background and did not understand basic concepts. My teacher spent several hours with me outside of class explaining those things to me, and even gave me extra worksheets to do so I would be on an equal playing field with my classmates. The faculty is amazing. They seriously know what they are talking about, and honestly some of them are overqualified. I am so thankful to this school and everyone who has helped me become the student I am today.
North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics was an amazing experience where you can build a community as well as a great opportunity for college readiness with amazing resources at any students disposal. The campus is absolutely beautiful and quite serine, especially when outside.
It is quite a challenging school, not only academic wise but mentally. One thing I would like to see change is students having more time to actually enjoy campus itself and to have more down-time.
I would like to see more holidays being observed on campus rather than forcing students go home every time there is no class on a weekday.
