Overall, I had a wonderful time! While it still has the problems that come with every public high school, Watauga has worked hard to create a place for teenagers to discover their passion. There is an abundance in classes for any interest you can think of. There are also some amazing programs to help you get certified, get ready for the workforce, or go to college.
Watauga County Schools are very impacted by Appalachian State University in it's backyard. There is a very liberal vibe that permeates into the high school especially. The academic opportunities are great, and there are many clubs and extracurricular activities that support all students. The athletic programs are strong, but also limited by the weather (winter especially).
If you have an autistic child in Watauga County, the best thing you can do for their education is move away.
