As a former student at Shakopee High School, I can confidently say one thing, I am glad to be switching out of it. Before you take this the wrong way, let me explain why. Shakopee High School is one outstanding school when it comes to career readiness, their program is extremely emphasized the moment you enter freshmen year, where you take classes to figure out what career you are interested in and how you want to plan the rest of your life until you retire. For example, they talk you into what your interests are, what jobs you like, and what you are good at, then they make you choose an academy. Every student by the end of the year is selected into a group based on what they want to pursue as a career, you have people who are interested in technology, fine arts, human connections, engineering, health, etc. It's great but the kids there are not nice, they are mean, and if you choose the wrong academy, you will get bullied. Also, there are way too many kids that vape and do drugs here.
In my experience at Shakopee High School, I have been involved in many student clubs like SAGA and the News Paper club. I have learned a lot about collaboration and as well as leadership while being in these club things I will use in years to come.
As a very involved student in my highschool, I can say that I have had a combination of both high and low experiences in my last few years. Some things that I really love about our school is the amount of emphasis they put on making sure we are ready for the world outside of high school. This is in the form of various hands on experiences, real world working with clients, certifications, and networking opportunities that are available in our various classes. Because of our academy model, it is easy for students to pursue a career path that would interest them. However, there are some downsides. It is clear which of the teachers cares about students education and which do not. Overall it’s not so bad, but I have experienced some very bad teachers. If I were to see something changed, it would be to implement some sort of a longer process to make sure that our teachers are qualified to teach students the content in an explicit and helpful way.
