It's a good school system. Not great, but also not terrible either, just good. Overall, the teachers care and it's pretty well-resourced given its location. I had a lot of wonderful teachers who worked tirelessly to help me succeed, and I felt quite prepared by the time I made it to college. My main gripe is that it is definitely a small-town school system, both in its limited opportunities relative to some other VA schools, and in that the mix of students from primarily petty-bourgeois and rural working class backgrounds makes for a pretty conservative atmosphere (not very fun as a young queer person). If you already live or plan to live in the Roanoke Valley, this is a good place to send your kids, but I wouldn't recommend moving to the area just for the schools.
Overall my experience has been pretty okay. The teachers I have had are amazing at understanding, and trying to help students. The worst part of my experience is how the administration goes about handling vaping. They shut down the bathrooms, and lock them during class changes. But expect students to use the restroom during class changes. Then they tell teachers to limit students going to the restrooms during class time. So students are forced to run around trying to find what restrooms are open during class change time. Which inevitably makes them late, due to only having 5 minutes to change classes. This is causing many kids to not use the restroom at all during school, resulting in many students having UTIs.
Overall very good experience! Wide variety of classes, electives. Teachers and counselors do a very good job to just push you to graduate high school, but push you even further to get ready for life beyond high school, going into college.
