I was in the Fayette County Public School system throughout 3rd grade to my senior year of high school. The schools that I went to were overall highly geared in sports and academics resulting in a well balanced school population. However, there were some moments where the staff were racist to their students and often thought of POC children as less than. This lack of support and motivation resulted in many of the students doubting themselves where I'm positive if they had the right people in their corner advocating for them, they would be able to do the same things a gifted or AP student would be able to. Another thing is due to the county lines with Clayton County as our border, there has been a lot more violence that last two years of my high school career versus the previous years and I'm saying that as a POC individual who went through this school system. You can tell that the majority of the teachers love teaching and you can also tell there are some teachers who would rather not.
In Fayette County High School, it offers plenty of diverse courses to choose from that helps prepare for college readiness. Teachers and staff are helpful for the most part with bettering students with their grades and classwork; however, the math accelerated courses are not helpful sometimes as some of the teachers do not help the students and some students may fall behind on lessons. Overall, in this school, the college readiness is beneficial for the students here and the teachers and staff care for the students for the most part.
Fayette county schools are mostly well rounded, though there are multiple changes that can be made regarding the school environment, culture, and education. In many classes, you’re seen as just another student. Teachers don’t consider how long you’ve slept or the fact that we are taking 6 other classes and i’m supposed to put their class on a pedestal and disregard everything else. While some teachers are like this, there are a handful of wonderful teachers who care about our academic and social life. I’ve noticed myself and peers that students tend to do better with these types of teachers. I retain the knowledge better since i’m not being forced to finish it in a certain time frame and find myself having a better mentality toward the teacher. I do understand that teachers have to be a certain way in order for students not to take advantage of, having some time to unwind and not being constantly ordered to do work would elevate the stress on students
