The worst part about East Grand Rapids High School was the culture. It was extremely competitive, and not in a positive way. Students who achieved the highest were not recognized for their achievements on a personal level, but rather put on a pedestal as an example. Any damage those students endured while pushing themselves to be the best was disregarded. Students often one-upped each other on who stayed up studying the latest, who was participating in the most extracurriculars at once, etc, etc. This culture was perpetuated by parents and teachers, all bent on continuing EGRHS’ “Tradition of Excellence” at any cost. Of course, this “excellence” meant one thing only: the best college. Careers that did not require a college education were out of the question. I would like to see this culture change in the next couple of years. I hope EGR embraces a wider range of careers to explore after high school. I believe this would improve the mental health of students, and the overall atmosphere.
Teaching mostly privileged kids who have a history of being better than most lowly teachers. A handful of students and their righteous parents every year dictate attitude and direction.
Excellence is earned not gained from conniving and financing.

Well, I am an African American Lady and I found that my school lacked diversity and didn't take action to help out the minority students. I would say there are great academics and sports and a lot of options for extracurricular activities. I would love to see more diverse programs within the material that is being taught.
