Decatur High School has some very significant problems with school culture right now. The teachers and administration do not know the names of the students, they seem to have little interest in the development and well-being of the students, and they are rude to the parents. Most of the students are good kids in normal stages of development, and the school responds to any opposition or issue by micromanaging them and testing them to death. Meanwhile, serious problems go ignored. The administration, in my opinion, fails to have due process for discipline, doesn't have basic teaching materials for core classes, and allows teachers to write and say untruthful, biased and ignorant things about the kids and parents. Some teachers are great, but they have little authority or influence. The community can't seem to find a way to hold the administration and problem teachers accountable because there is so much retaliation when you speak up.
Kindergarten to Senior year was rough, but worth it. Overall the district is pretty good at preparing students for their future. The elementary schools use the IB curriculum and the middle school uses the IB middle years programme to try to diversify students and to prepare them for the possible IB diploma programme at DHS. CSD administration is annoying and makes useless rules that even faculty dislike. The middle school staff is not very good as it seems like they don't really care about their students. The district is good in requiring a world language (spanish) through almost the entire time. I began learning spanish in kindergarten and I am now a senior, and I speak enough to get around in a Spanish speaking country on my own. The teachers are really good, and some of them even have their Ph.D. I have been with some of the same classmate for the past twelve years, and some people may like that, and some people may not.
Decatur High School has a really challenging curriculum. There is a culture of hard work and support. There are different career paths and diploma tracks you can take there as well. Most teachers go the extra mile to make sure all of us students do well. Unfortunately, that is not true for all teachers. Decatur has had some issues with favoritism and racism. My mom works on the district and she says they are working on it by making teachers engage in what she calls courageous conversations. I hope that helps because all students should be treated equitably. Outside of that, I have enjoyed my high school years. I have a great track coach and counselor. My counselor makes sure I'm on track for graduation and that I'm completing all tasks needed for college applications. I'm really going to miss Decatur when I graduate. It was a great 3 years and I'm looking forward to a great senior year.
