Amherst schools are often regarded as a high point of living in the district. While the schools do provide a good amount of academic rigor and support, there are a number of issues that plague my school. Since the first grade, I've witnessed ceiling tiles fall out of the ceiling any time there was rain. Occasionally, these tiles would fall on important school facilities (like books in the library), or even worse, on students. In addition, last year, we had a massive scandal with homophobia at our middle school (which I attended, prior to this incident). Our high school newspaper wrote an expository piece on it and then national news picked up the story. While there have been new rules put in place, there is still an underlying fear at the middle school that we need to rectify.
I had an amazing experience at my high school. The teachers were friendly and genuinely cared about their students. They always went above and beyond To make sure we had the resources we needed to succeed. My guidance counselor was especially wonderful. She helped me through some of my toughest and made sure I had the support I needed to get through it all. Overall I would highly recommend this school to anyone looking for a supportive and inclusive environment.
I like how the teachers are truly there to support the students. I also like how if there is a problem at our school, it is always addressed throughout the school in a professional way. I would hope for the future there are not as many racist remarks, and we can move forward as a diverse, safe community.
