Rating 3.69 out of 5 98 reviews
Acton-Boxborough High School in Acton, MA, is renowned for its rigorous academic standards and competitive environment. Students are pushed to excel, ensuring they are exceptionally well-prepared for college. However, this high-pressure atmosphere comes with some drawbacks. Despite the school's strong emphasis on academics, it offers limited Advanced Placement (AP) courses and minimal resources for standardized test preparation, often leaving students to adopt a self-taught approach.
Outside the classroom, the school's spirit and extracurricular engagement are notably low, which might detract from the overall high school experience for some. Nevertheless, the focus on high learning standards ensures that students leave Acton-Boxborough with a solid academic foundation, ready to tackle the challenges of higher education.

Pros: Good academics. Competitive environment that challenges students. Options for advanced students. Safe school.
Cons: Competitiveness can be stressful for some students. Administration seems a bit top-heavy and had a rough patch on budgeting. Working through that now. Recent faculty and admin hires seem to be focused more on diversity than merit. Academics are still good, but, talking with students, it seems like a return to emphasizing learning over "diversity" sessions would be welcome. Still a great district.

We moved to Acton specifically for the highly regarded public school system which, in our view, justified one of the highest tax rates in the state. A-B is very competitive. If your child has no learning challenges but isn’t an athlete, they’re likely to feel like an outsider and lose motivation to do well academically. Unfortunately the schools lack resources to help these types of students, so the school experience becomes a miserable one for the student. If I had it to do over, I would not have moved here.
