Although Carmel High School's (CHS) large student size and well-supported extracurriculars are intended to support an atmosphere of personal expression, the lack of support for students unable to find a school-supported niche has created a divide within the student population. For those in programs such as marching band, football, and choir, the school will provide ample amounts of attention and praise. The clear through-line between all of these activities is that each one provides a way for CHS to win some form of recognition or pride within a given field. For students that do not find themselves within a broader merit-winning extracurricular, they may often find themselves excluded or pushed aside in favor of students who are participate. This creates a higher pressure for students to reduce their personal interests in favor of school-supported activity, directly contradicting the initial benefits of such a large high school.
Carmel High School is a great school that offers many opportunities for its students. As a recent graduate of the International Baccalaureate program at Carmel High School I can confirm that the students are a diverse and open minded group who enjoy learning and using their knowledge to help others. Additionally, the teachers of the IB and honors classes are always willing to help their students with research projects, homework, or clubs.
I have really enjoyed my time at Carmel High School so far. I think the best part is the community that you can find in the small things. I have spent a lot of time at choir rehearsals, and I have just felt like it really bonds everyone together, and you can find a small community in such a large community like Carmel’s. I think the only worst thing I would say is that sometimes since it’s such a big school, you don’t get the necessary attention you need for a particular subject. sometimes it can be kind of hard to keep up with the academic rigger at Carmel as well as stay sane with your other extracurricular activities, but want to find a good balance between the two to keep yourself challenged and motivated. I feel like it’s a great place to be moved around several school district that I’ve been at the longest and it’s been my favorite because I feel like I’ve been challenged here my whole time that I’ve been here and I feel like my peers are also like minded as I am, which is great.
