At BASIS Independent Brooklyn we believe in educating students to the highest international standards. We designed our Lower School at 405 Gold Street to support the needs of PreK-grade 2 students, and our Upper School in Red Hook caters to older students (Gr. 3-12).

We educate young students with expert instruction in the liberal arts and sciences, including: Mandarin, music, engineering, world history, math, and hands-on, project-based learning. Our passionate subject experts believe that with the right support and encouragement, any motivated child can achieve academic excellence. Our world-acclaimed program is inspired by best practices from around the world, and facilitates a joyful learning culture where hard work is celebrated and intellectual pursuits result in extraordinary opportunities.

Starting our 10th school year we are launching an innovative mentorship program, focused on evolving opportunities across industries given the advent of new technology, particularly AI.

We absolutely love BASIS! The teachers and administrators are exceptional—supportive and skilled at nurturing a love for learning in the kids. The curriculum is challenging yet engaging, and our son has thrived, growing academically and personally. He genuinely enjoys school, and we appreciate how they balance rigorous academics with down time. The school excels in fostering not just academic growth but also social-emotional development, ensuring well-rounded children.

The daily schedule and teacher structure are well-organized, contributing to a positive learning environment. While sports had room for improvement, we're pleased with the positive changes under the new athletic director. We enthusiastically recommend BASIS for families focused on strong academics and holistic child development. The parent community is vibrant, fostering excellent communication and collaboration.

Review BASIS Independent Brooklyn

My son has attended Basis Brooklyn since K, and loves it there. He’ll be a freshman next year and never considered applying to a different high school. With few exceptions, the teachers are excellent (or weeded out). The academics are challenging (but not unreasonable), the amount of homework is manageable (mostly finished in school), and there’s plenty of opportunity to receive additional support when needed. Admin is generally responsive to suggestions on how to improve the school experience. For instance, they’ve recently hired an Athletic Director who, within months- raised the bar significantly to create a more successful, robust program. The student/teacher ratio ensures individualized attention/support as kids decide the directions their life will lead (including excellent college counseling). Highly recommend you check it out!

We like BASIS for our children because it is intellectually nurturing and prepares them well for the future. Beyond the pure passion for knowledge, kids are also taught important general tool sets, rigor and organizational habits (such as time management!) that make them more self-reliant, independent and “good at learning”.

E.g., BASIS teaches the kids how to deal with “failure”. If in a science class their toothpick bridge does not hold the expected weight, they learn ways to overcome this: discuss with your team; receive support from your teachers during student hours; seek help from your fellow students; rethink the instructions; most importantly, try again!

Not only does this teach the kids the practical skills of teamwork and exploring different ways to solve a problem, it also fosters their mental and emotional resilience to deal with failure and to keep trying. Arguably, the most important trait in life is grit and the ability to persevere. BASIS kids have this in abundance.
