UVA is an amazing community! Both the University itself and the surrounding area are beautiful and lively places. I've been able to do many of the things I've been interested in, including sports, research, and building connections. I would absolutely recommend anyone interested in UVA to come visit and apply to the school!
There are some areas that I would like to see more student involvement, like in our sports and school activities, but you can’t beat the social scene on the corner and beyond. That said, I feel as though there is a disconnect between UVA Admin and the student body. Things like the closing of Mad Bowl during Midsummers 2024 despite it being a classic school tradition for decades, perhaps one could even argue centuries, shows a disconnect between the interests of UVA administration and an aspect of the college experience that many students came to the school specifically for. Of course, a part of me sees where they are coming from, as it is a mitigation of certain risk, but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with their decision. There is a difference between covering your own butt and actively targeting student-organized social activities that are otherwise out of their control. At the end of the day, I think administration needs to better understand the desires of their student body.
During my freshman year, I witnessed a lot, from wild parties to passionate protests in front of the Rotunda. I had the opportunity to join various student organizations, such as the architecture and prop design club, where I made lifelong friendships. As an architecture major, I spent countless long nights at the A-school studio, working on intricate projects and perfecting my craft. My friends and I bonded over the intensity of what we humorously call 'architorture,' supporting each other through late-night design sessions and critiques. These experiences taught me resilience, teamwork, and the importance of balancing work and social life. Overall, I learned a lot, thoroughly enjoyed my time at school, and can't wait for my second year.
