Academically, this school's courses are satisfying and challenging. The professors are knowledgeable in their expertise and you can tell how passionate they are about their content. The food options are good, though I will say I wish we were given more Triton Cash. In terms of housing, it is frustrating that some first-year dorms are naturally better/modern, due to the year that they were built (like Muir), so I'm hoping to see future improvements in those dorms. Additionally, the party scene of this school is not the best, especially compared to its neighboring schools. Considering the school canceled Sun God this year, I can't say it was the best. Regardless, I would say I enjoyed this year, as the location and free public transport allows students to explore San Diego and take advantage of what it has to offer. Overall, I am excited to return next year.
At UCSD I've met the people and community I didn't know I needed. Its amazing finding such likeminded people with such similar interests and there's so many niche clubs and corners of the campus to explore. Sure sometimes it takes half an hour to walk to class but there are buses and scooters and generally nice views that make it alright. Geisel is beautiful and you truly do feel like an academic weapon anywhere you study on campus. I didn't plan on applying to this school, but I can't imagine being this happy or involved anywhere else.
UC San Diego is a top-tier university with exceptional programs, faculty, and research opportunities. However, it is what you make of it. The sunny weather, beaches, and a large party scene nearby can become distractions from your academics. From my experience, the top 10% are truly exceptional, talented, genius-level students. To be a part of this competitive 10% is very difficult and requires a certain type of student, especially in STEM fields. Another 50% are focused, diligent students who are striving to be succeed in their academics. The other 40% simply want to have a good time in college and end up with a degree. Ultimately, UCSD offers you the chance to reach your full potential. It is up to you to define what that potential entails.
