What are mechanics majors?

There are many different types of mechanic programs available at colleges and universities. Some schools offer two- or four-year programs that lead to a certificate or degree, while others offer shorter, non-credit courses. Most mechanics programs teach students the basics of engine operation and maintenance, transmission repair, suspension and steering systems, brakes, electrical systems, and emissions control. Many programs also include courses in customer service and business management. Some colleges offer specialized programs in areas such as diesel mechanics, automotive air conditioning, or motorcycle repair. Some two-year programs allow students to choose a specialization, such as auto body repair or collision repair.

Popular mechanics majors by degrees awarded

On average, around 19,900 students obtain a bachelor's degree or associate degree in all mechanics fields each year. In 2021, the most popular major within mechanics was automotive mechanics with 40 students obtaining a bachelor's degree and 8,111 students obtaining an associate degree. The least popular major was motorcycle maintenance and repair with fewer than 5 students obtaining a bachelor's degree and 27 students obtaining an associate degree. Overall, mechanics is a relatively uncommon area of study.
