What are design majors?

A design program will prepare you to apply your creativity to a number of practical fields. Depending on the particular program, your coursework might include topics ranging from art history to computer programming. Design majors can go on to positions like illustrator, animator, graphic designer, fashion designer, photographer, marketing professional, programmer, web designer, video game designer and theater/set designer.

Popular design majors by degrees awarded

On average, around 28,300 students obtain a bachelor's degree or associate degree in all design fields each year. In 2021, the most popular major within design was graphic design with 7,414 students obtaining a bachelor's degree and 2,343 students obtaining an associate degree. The least popular major was metal and jewelry arts with 68 students obtaining a bachelor's degree and 26 students obtaining an associate degree. Overall, design is a relatively popular area of study.
