How popular is teaching English as a second language as a major?
Each year, around 390 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 10 students obtain an associate degree in teaching English as a second language. In 2021, 401 students received a bachelor's degree and 6 students received an associate degree. This is 4% more teaching English as a second language majors than there were in 2020. Teaching English as a second language is a relatively uncommon major within education.

Share your experienceTeaching English as a second language can be eye opening because it can show a person how difficult learning a language can be. As a teacher you find ways to teach English in a new way or in a new manner it is important to consider the challenges too. Teaching can be fun because as a teacher there is the opportunity to bring fun and creativity into the classroom as well. Students can learn with visuals or by listening and a teacher will guide them to dominate English and get around in the real world. Language is so important because it is at the core of everything we do. If we couldn't communicate it would be difficult to get around or understand the needs that others may have.
Definitely don't try to "just get by" in this class. You'll want all the information you can get so you can do the best job possible:)
Always be sure that the subject you're teaching is one that you enjoy and is comfortable with. Do realize the many ups and downs that you may encounter when teaching a diverse group of students who has different levels of learning skills or difficulties; not all students are capable of progressing as well as others, there will be many challenges. You, the instructor must be willing and prepared to work with students with various attitudes and behaviors; knowing when to intervene and solve situations that takes place within your surrounding.
TESOL is an amazing education field. I think that having the opportunity to meet new people, and being able to help them succeed in their life and their life goals is definitely rewarding. The professors were all helpful and supportive and encouraging. You will never feel anxious about asking a question, or even for help. Everyone that I have met in the field is very positive and encouraging as well. I hope this helps!
Focus on reading every day even if it’s for 5-10 minutes because that 5-10 minutes can help the flow of reading paragraphs better. Reading makes your brain stay active and you can learn more definitions of different words. Having more words in your vocabulary makes a more detailed essay.
