What is a substance abuse and addiction counseling major?
Mental and social health services programs train participants to help prevent substance abuse, counsel individuals and families with drug and alcohol problems, and perform intervention and therapeutic services for persons suffering from addiction. Concentrations include individual and group counseling skills, psychology of addiction, sociology, crisis intervention, substance abuse identification methodologies, substance abuse treatment modalities, substance abuse prevention and treatment resources, pharmacology and behavioral aspects of abused substances, treatment evaluation, patient observation and education, group dynamics, professional standards and ethics, and applicable law and regulations.

A lot of people that are needing counseling is people who want to hear from personal experiences along with academics and things that you can prove. From my personal experience I listened to someone who lived it and not just read about it. This profession is one that don't make you a lot of money but it is so rewarding on a personal level.
