What is a sign language major?

Sign language programs rely on American Sign Language as a visual and motor medium of communication and discourse for deaf individuals and deaf culture. It includes instruction in the development of ASL, ASL morphology and syntax, signing technique, English translation of ASL, formal and colloquial ASL, and ASL transcription.

How popular is sign language as a major?

Each year, around 550 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 980 students obtain an associate degree in sign language. In 2021, 548 students received a bachelor's degree and 1,008 students received an associate degree. This is relatively the same number of sign language majors as there were in 2020. Sign language is a relatively popular major compared to other foreign languages majors.
