What is a music theory and composition major?
Music theory and composition study sequences focus on the study of the principles of sound manipulation as applied to the creation of music, and the techniques of creating and arranging music. Concentrations include in aural theory, melody, counterpoint, complex harmony, modulation, chromatics, improvisation, progressions, musical writing, instrumentation, orchestration, electronic and computer applications, studies of specific musical styles, and development of original creative ability.

How popular is music theory and composition as a major?
Each year, around 700 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 75 students obtain an associate degree in music theory and composition. In 2021, 655 students received a bachelor's degree and 129 students received an associate degree. This is 9% more music theory and composition majors than there were in 2020. Music theory and composition is a relatively popular major compared to other music majors.

Share your experienceWork hard but know that it is a very competitive field. Find internships or ways to study outside of your normal day to day studies between semesters.
Be willing to ask questions and put yourself out there. Asking questions will open opportunities as your professors see that you care to expand your knowledge. Putting yourself out there will leave a good mark on your professors and peers that you are excited about being there and learning the best you can.
It is a competitive field but you should pursue it if it is truly your passion. The biggest obstacle people face is self-doubt.
Keeping going and move at your own pace. A lot of people including me can get super caught up in looking at everyone else’s skill level and how much they may be improving. However, the important thing to focus on is: how are YOU improving, and are you better than you were before after each experience. The most important thing is to focus on your own skill level and be on your own growth.
I would say that for me music theory is difficult to understand but fun to learn!
