What is a music theory and composition major?

Music theory and composition study sequences focus on the study of the principles of sound manipulation as applied to the creation of music, and the techniques of creating and arranging music. Concentrations include in aural theory, melody, counterpoint, complex harmony, modulation, chromatics, improvisation, progressions, musical writing, instrumentation, orchestration, electronic and computer applications, studies of specific musical styles, and development of original creative ability.

Each year, around 700 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 75 students obtain an associate degree in music theory and composition. In 2021, 655 students received a bachelor's degree and 129 students received an associate degree. This is 9% more music theory and composition majors than there were in 2020.
