What is a music technology major?
This program focuses on the creative aspects of the blending of music and technology and prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to the composition, recording, synthesis, and performance of music, audio-visual production, scoring for film and multimedia, and software and multimedia development. Course topics include music theory, music history, composition, acoustics, recording technology, computer composition, electronic music synthesis, technology-based performance, 3D sound and spatial audio, and music business and law.

How popular is music technology as a major?
Each year, around 600 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 620 students obtain an associate degree in music technology. In 2021, 637 students received a bachelor's degree and 806 students received an associate degree. This is relatively the same number of music technology majors as there were in 2020. Music technology is one of the most popular majors within music.

Share your experienceBe creative and get as much experience as you can outside of class. If you're not applying what you learn in class to your personal projects and gigs, you're missing out.
You will be expected to have some sort of background in music performance or theory, so practice and develop related skills to go hand-in-hand with the material learned in the program.
Don't be overwhelmed with the technology that is out there. Start with what you have access to!
It’s ok if you don’t know much about the music theory part of music technology, though it can be helpful. Anyone can be a music technologist if you are creative, have a good ear know what sounds good, and are willing to learn new things.
