A general study in music focuses on the introductory study and appreciation of music and the performing arts. Includes instruction in music, dance, and other performing arts media. Subsets include: music history, jazz studies, music technology, conducting, voice and opera, musical instruments, music theory and composition.

The national average salary for general music graduates in the United States is $55,000 per year. Those in the top 10 percent make over $131,000 a year, while the bottom 10 percent make under $18,000 a year. While salary ranges can vary by role, industry, and location, general music graduates typically make between $31,000 and $85,000 per year.

How popular is general music as a major?

Each year, around 1,400 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 100 students obtain an associate degree in general music. In 2021, 1,291 students received a bachelor's degree and 67 students received an associate degree. This is 2% fewer general music majors than there were in 2020. General music is a relatively popular major compared to other music majors.
