What is a missionary studies major?

This path of study focuses on the theory and practice of religious outreach, social service and proselytization, and prepares individuals for mission vocations. One can expect instruction in theology, evangelism, preaching, medical and social mission work, missionary education, missionary aviation, emergency services, legal and political aspects of working in other countries, and preparation for ordination as missionaries.

How popular is missionary studies as a major?

Each year, around 530 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 60 students obtain an associate degree in missionary studies. In 2021, 455 students received a bachelor's degree and 32 students received an associate degree. This is 9% fewer missionary studies majors than there were in 2020. Missionary studies is a relatively uncommon major within religious studies.
