What is a metal and jewelry arts major?

Students who study metal and jewelry arts are prepared both creatively and technically to express emotions, ideas, or inner visions by fashioning artworks from gems, other stones, and precious metals. This includes instruction in gemology, metalsmithing and finishing, stone cutting and polishing, metal and non-metal casting and molding, electroforming, metal coloring, enameling, photo etching, lapidary technique and art, design concepts, and personal style development.

How popular is metal and jewelry arts as a major?

Each year, around 100 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 55 students obtain an associate degree in metal and jewelry arts. In 2021, 68 students received a bachelor's degree and 26 students received an associate degree. This is 25% fewer metal and jewelry arts majors than there were in 2020. Metal and jewelry arts is a relatively uncommon major within design.
