What is a medical records technician major?

Students learning to be medical records technicians are trained, under the supervision of health information administrators and other professionals, to construct medical records and clinical databases, perform manipulations on retrieved data, control the security and quality of records, and supervise data entry and technical maintenance personnel. Instructional topics include clinical and biomedical science data and information requirements, database management, data coding and validation, information security, quality control, health information content and structure, medical business procedures, and legal requirements.

How popular is medical records technician as a major?

Each year, around 75 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 5,120 students obtain an associate degree in medical records technician. In 2021, 70 students received a bachelor's degree and 3,854 students received an associate degree. This is 4% more medical records technician majors than there were in 2020. Medical records technician is a relatively popular major compared to other medical assistants and technician majors.
