Marriage and family therapy and counseling students are trained for the independent professional practice of marriage and family therapy, involving the diagnosis of cognitive, affective, and behavioral domain disorders, both mental and emotional, within the context of marriage and family systems and the application of short- and long-term therapeutic strategies in family group contexts. Curriculum specifics include psychotherapy, family systems and studies, small group intervention and therapy, marital problems, depression, identification of psychopathologies and behavioral disorders, holistic health care, practice management, applicable regulations, and professional standards and ethics.

I would say prepare to spend a lot of time reading. You will also need to become great at managing time if you are not already great at managing time. The assignments and exams are difficult.
Follow your dreams and use your time wisely. Counseling is not for the faint of heart. Especially in the marriage and family department. You need sympathy. A chance to bring out your inner feelings.
If you go into a career or not from this degree. I would still recommend taking at least a class in it. It does teach you alot about family dynamics and I feel much more prepared to have my own family one day. Along with a greater understanding and appreciation of my own upbringing.
Push through your struggles, it will all be worth it at the end. Have a passion for learning because it will make it more enjoyable.
