What is a marine transportation major?

This concentration focuses on the skills used to move people and goods in marine vehicles. Subsets include commercial fishing, professional diver and instructor, marine science, and merchant marine studies. In particular, students study fishing vessel operation, equipment repair, applicable legal regulations, maritime traditions and law, maritime policy, economics and management of commercial marine operations, basic naval architecture and engineering, shipboard power systems engineering, crew supervision, and administrative procedures.

How popular is marine transportation as a major?

Each year, around 25 students obtain an associate degree in marine transportation. In 2021, 16 students received an associate degree. This is 33% fewer marine transportation majors than there were in 2020. Marine transportation is a relatively uncommon major within trades and personal services.
