What is a managerial economics major?

Managerial economics is a concentration that focuses on the application of economics principles to the analysis of the organization and operation of business enterprises. This involves courses in monetary theory, banking and financial systems, theory of competition, pricing theory, wage and salary/incentive theory, analysis of markets, and applications of econometrics and quantitative methods to the study of particular businesses and business problems.

Those in the top 10 percent make over $250,000 a year, while the bottom 10 percent make under $30,000 a year. While salary ranges can vary by role, industry, and location, managerial economics graduates typically make between $52,000 and $150,000 per year.

How popular is managerial economics as a major?

Each year, around 5,900 students obtain a bachelor’s degree and around 40 students obtain an associate degree in managerial economics. In 2021, 5,360 students received a bachelor's degree and 69 students received an associate degree. This is 7% fewer managerial economics majors than there were in 2020. Managerial economics is a relatively popular major compared to other business and management majors.
